Runyon Metal Spoiler Series Tenor Saxophone MouthpieceThe latest in state of the art technology for reed instrument mouthpieces, the Spoiler is a Runyon innovation that allows the musician to change the performance qualities of the mouthpiece with the included Spoiler Insert.Runyon's Metal Mouthpieces have been a favorite among professional saxophonist for many years. In order to insure the proper flex modulus required for the saxophone tone, Runyon's Metal Mouthpieces are composed primarily of manganese and bronze. Many do not realize that the tone on reed instruments is produced not only by the primary vibrations of the reed, but also by the sympathetic vibrations of the mouthpiece itself. This is why the flex modulus is so critically important in determining the mouthpiece's soundRunyon's Metal Mouthpieces are plated with chromium which is the second hardest of all metallic elements. This chromium plating makes the mouthpieces smooth and durable, as well as less susceptible to scratching and disfigurement. Softer metallic plating materials such as nickel, gold, or silver are much more susceptible to nicks, scratches, and disfigurement. There is a common misconception, even among professional musicians, concerning mouthpiece materials. Many erroneously assume that softer substances, such as plastic or hard rubber, are capable of producing a darker, softer, or more mellow tone than that produced by metal mouthpieces. However, the darkness of the tone is due mainly to the size and dimensions of the tone chamber, not the mouthpiece material itself. The saxophone tone produced by all Runyon Metal Mouthpieces may be radically modified, even revolutionized, by the insertion of a "Spoiler". This insertable baffle, for example, will enable the player to increase the volume of the tone. The insertion of the spoiler will actually increase the volume by about forty percent. The spoiler's tone will have considerably more edge and brightness, rendering it much more suitable for the modern jazz and rock sounds. In order to approximate the tonal variety and varied volumetric power of Runyon Metal Mouthpieces with the included Spoiler, it would be necessary for the saxophonist to use two different mouthpieces, each with a differentially-sized, built-in baffle. With Runyon Metal mouthpieces, with its insertable spoiler, the saxophonist needs only one mouthpiece, for he will have, in effect, two mouthpieces for the price of one.

I've used many mouthpieces since 1973, but the "Spoiler" is the last I've used since 1985. It is easy blowing, versatile in style, easy to adjust using the "Tuning Grip" (I gave that name for Santy to use on his promo-ads.) I use the "Bari" plastic reed size medium with a "Rovner" ligature. I play a Selmer Mk. VI and a Selmer Super Balanced Action tenor saxophones. The mouthpiece gives me a big full sound, much like that of: Boots Randolph, Vido Musso, Charlie Ventura, Sam Butera... and can also cut through the loudness of rock and r&b. It is also versatile with many brands of horns and reed & ligature combinations.
This mouthpiece gave my tenor sax a whole new personality! I use a 2.5 Rico Plasticover or 2.5 Rico Reserve reed, though I have used a Vandoren Java 3. The spoiler makes all the difference in the world.
I have played many different tenor mouthpiece models over the years and never been totally happy with any of them. There has always been some aspect of every mpc that wasn't real good... not quite the right tone quality I wanted, doesn't speak well in some registers, too bright, too dark, too stuffy, etc. But this Runyon mpc has it all. I recently extensively play-tested about 20 tenor mouthpieces from WWBW, including some of the best models like Link metal and HR, Jody Jazz ESP, SR Tech Legend HR, Meyer, Van Doren Java/Jumbo Java/V16, and a few Runyon models. This Runyon metal piece was far superior to all of them in my opinion. Using a Rico Royal #3 reed, it was much more responsive than the other mpcs, and the tone has incredible depth and color and power. Excellent intonation up and down the horn, and the low end of the horn spoke much easier, either sub tone or full volume, using this mpc than the other mpcs I tested. The removable spoiler/baffle makes the mpc extremely versatile. Even with the spoiler out, I can either get a tone without much edge which will blend with a sax section, or I can get a big powerful sound for solo work. Putting the spoiler in gives a brighter sound with more edge and bite. This mpc is truly amazing.
I got this MP when I went to the University of North Texas in 2002 and I'm very happy with it. The spoiler is a nice touch. With it in, I get a loud bright sound. With it out it's more of a studio sound (dark and full). It works in stage band, combo, and solo for me. I've tried other MP, but for me I always go back to the Runyon. I play on Yanagisawa 900 tenor, 901 Alto and 800 Soprano Saxes. I use Runyon 5 for all three.
