Getting to Know the Schilke Instrument Company

Famous Attention to Detail

Featuring top-notch quality and meticulous attention to detail, instruments made by The Schilke Instrument Company are amongst the finest in the market. Schilke understands that professional musicians take great pride in their livelihood and they strive to provide the absolute best in hand-crafted brass instruments and mouthpieces.

Company founder Renold Schilke, was born in Green Bay Wisconsin in 1910. A professional musician who performed with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra (CSO) as their principle trumpet player, he quickly became discontented with the quality of instruments offered at the time. During his tenure with CSO and with The Schilke Instrument Company he designed a number of trumpets, flugelhorns, trombones and mouthpieces still being used today. Schilke employees still carefully make each instrument one at a time with the specific guidelines laid out by its founder decades ago.

During the time Renold Schilke was designing instruments, he focused on improving and simplifying the pitch and intonation of his instruments. He spent time focusing on the key nodes for every individual pitch of the wind instruments, allowing him to scientifically improve on existing design and function. He also tested different alloys to investigate how sounds would alter. He concluded that plating and lacquer do provide different resonances and tones due to lacquer changing the resilience of many alloys.

Schilke's intricate work and patience in his field helped to put Schilke Instruments in the forefront of professional musical instrument design to this day. With unmistakable excellence in craftsmanship, they remain the company of choice for artists all over the world. They are now owned by Andrew Naumann and accommodated in a 16,000 sq. ft. facility in Melrose Park, Illinois.
