I was looking for a soprano sax that would fit my budget. I found it in the Allora, Paris Series Soprano. I play tenor as my main horn and had a soprano several years ago, but sold it. I love the soprano sound and wanted to get another. I spent a lot of time on the WWBW site and, kept looking at the Allora 806 (black nickel body, gold lacquer keys). I decided to go for it. Great decision, I was NOT disapointed. It arrived in a few days. The keys were corked, it was wrapped in heavy paper and in a plastic bag. My first impression was that the lacquer was flawless and the extensive engraving was beautiful. It plays and sounds as great as it looks. Keywork moves freely & spring action gives excellent response. I have had it 2 1/2 months now and love playing it. The tone is even, top to bottom. The two necks give it extra versatility (I prefer the straight neck). It is very well constructed and, is heavier than my old Jupiter sop. I will be upgrading the mouthpiece but the stock piece is decent. The case is great too. It is a soft case but is well padded and has plenty of storage. It has side/end handles and, it easily converts to a backpack (took it to practice on my motorcycle) and, also has a shoulder strap. My horn played excellent right out of the case. No adjustments needed. Came with cork grease, swab and neck strap (no reed but not a big deal). This is an incredible, professional level horn for a great price. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a great sax that won't break the bank.
For the price, this instrument is functional. I like the dark sound (bought the black lacquer), paired it with a Meijer G Series mouthpiece. The stock mouthpiece is pretty bright. I had to spend about an hour working on the instrument, still have a bit to do. Strengthened several springs that were weak & allowing the pads to leak. Adjusted (aka 'bent') a couple of keys into place. In particular, the 6 finger D was horribly sharp until the open key below was lowered. Still having a bit of challenge with the high register, and the low "gurgles" at times (indicating there are still some leaks for me to find). I think once I have everything worked out, this will be adequate for my needs... I am gentle with instruments, and capable of doing my own repairs. Bottom line: OK as a "doubling" instrument at a lower price, but expect to do some work on it. I wouldn't recommend this for schools, it's not durable enough.
