Excellent Value

Comments about Allora Student Series Tenor Saxophone Model AATS-301:

You can't beat this value. Some notes will crack on occasion and the pitch is a bit wacky, but these things can be controlled.

You need to buy a new mouthpiece and reeds as the stock is terrible and makes the instrument sound like a kazoo. I bought the J&D Hite Premiere Tenor Saxophone Mouthpiece (also a good value) and
Vandoren Tenor Saxophone Reeds which transformed the sound.

If you take my advice, you will have a solid sounding horn for an unbelievable price.

OK Student Tenor but May Need Adjustment

Comments about Allora Student Series Tenor Saxophone Model AATS-301:

Tuning of high notes with palm keys was generally too sharp and I added crescents made of cork to those holes. The right hand keys for low C and Eb are a little misplaced for comfort but still playable. Tone holes for palm keys had rough edges which I sanded to be even. The mouthpiece is ok after it was refaced and will now play the altissimo. One must assemble it carefully to avoid pulling down the neck. I've bought two of these saxes for students.

Good horn for the money

Comments about Allora Student Series Tenor Saxophone Model AATS-301:

I was looking for a tenor to get back in shape after having to lay off since 2008 a due to a medical condition that affected my chops. I didn't want to spend a lot of money and with the horn on sale I figured I would give it a go. I played saxophone professionally since 1962 and have a degree in saxophone performance and have been a music educator for over 40 years. The horn arrived last week and I have to say I am impressed. The horn plays great, intonation is spot on, the tone is consistent from top to bottom even with the funky stock mouthpiece. I did throw away the reeds that came with it and am using Rico Jazz Select reeds. I have a better mouthpiece ordered and expect it will be just fine. My only criticism of the keywork is the high F palm key is very low and hard to reach but that can be fixed by using a rubber palm key riser. One will be hard pressed to find a better value for the money, especially when the cost of a new professional horn is so prohibitive. It would be worth the time and money to try different mouthpiece and reed combinations to achieve a setup that is workable. Consult with a real saxophone player/teacher. This horn is worth the investment.

Mehh

Comments about Allora Student Series Tenor Saxophone Model AATS-301:

When I ordered this saxophone, I wasn't expecting anything exceptional, being that the price is low and well it's not one of the better brands. I'd say it's a fair student horn, but if you're anything more than a beginner, I wouldn't recommend this. I would just look for an old, used Selmer, Yamaha, or Bundy, which for the price play well for the age with some dings and scratches. But this sax has a neck that is an unnatural angle, especially if you're used to Yamaha student or professional models like I was in high school. The hand placement was also very awkward. It is skewed from what I would consider comfortable, if you're going to do anything besides play sitting down, (Ie. marching band, soloing, playing in a combo). This is why it's probably better for a beginner where sitting and playing will be all they do. The sound is ok, not great for the price and anything above middle D in the staff is hit and miss, whether or not they'll sound good or not.

Review of Allora Model AATS-301 Tenor Saxophone

By

Comments about Allora Student Series Tenor Saxophone Model AATS-301:

Saxophone arrived within two (2) business days of ordering. This saxophone was purchased for my son for used at his middle school bank. The saxophone plays well; however, there appears to be a leakage when playing the lower B note. It's very difficult to sustain the lower B note; however, Bb plays fine. I am considering calling Woodwind & Brasswind to ask if the have any suggestions related this issue. For a budget priced tenor saxophone, I was impressed with the sound. The keys are easy flowing, and the luster is splendid.
