I am a music teacher with minimal training on brass instruments (clarinet by trade). That being said, I've been self-teaching myself the bugle for about a year now, and I have found the experience to be extremely enjoyable. I've been tying my bugle and trumpet practice together, and have found that the bugle does not respond as easily as a trumpet. The bugle, because of its larger conical bore seems to need more air to function. As long as you move the air, this bugle will produce an absolute beautiful tone. The Amati 201 sounds more like a flugelhorn than a trumpet, and does not give you that crisp bugle sound you regularly hear from modern military or scouting bugles. Instead, it gives you a sweet and deep sound. The mouthpiece that comes with the bugle is good quality as well, and I much prefer it over my Bach 7C. The Bach mouthpiece changes the Amati's dark tone to a brighter tone.
I picked it up on Friday and played it over the weekend at a Civil War Reenactment. I am a low brass player but found this horn to be very easy to play. The tone quality is very good even for someone not used to playing with the small mouth pieces. I loved it, unit loved it, crowd loved it! The horn is a very high quality and finish is beautiful. I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for an appropriate reproduction bugle.
This model, the ABG 201 II, has nothing in common with the previous ABG 201. The previous model was a period-correct French-style Clairon bugle in B-flat, as was frequently used by Federal and Confederate troops. It was an excellent choice for reenacting. THIS newer model, the ABG 201 II, is NOT period correct by any measure. Nothing like it was ever carried by field musicians during the Civil War. If you show up at your event with one of these, you'll be the farby-est bugler on the field. It is also highly questionable, on the verge of being deceptive, for the other reviews, which reviewed the ORIGINAL ABG 201, to have been kept for this ABG 201 II when they do not apply at all to this instrument.
