I recently purchased this contrabassoon and received it about two weeks ago. The contra is a professional model, but I did not expect it to have all the bells and whistles that it came with. It has every key you could possibly want, along with some extras you wouldn't expect. The tone on this instrument is very nice and is capable of a large dynamic range while maintaining a steady pitch. I'm used to playing on a Mollenhauer that would rock a house off of its foundation and, I'm happy to report, this Amati is capable of the same seismic disturbances, and at a MUCH nicer price. It's no Puchner or Heckel, but for the price, it's well worth it. If price is a concern (and for most musicians, it really is), this may be the contra for you. It's the only one in its price range, but it plays like a much more expensive instrument. I'd recommend getting a different case (best to protect your investment upfront before any repairs need to be made!).
I have owned my Amati Contra for 2 years. It plays in tune with a good reed, and has a good 3+ octave range, I am still working on the fingerings for C5 and above in the 4th octave. I have found (for me) it speaks great throughout its range (I love playing the top and bottom ranges though). ((I went through several reeds before getting one that is good for me)) You will need a dolly or hand cart for it because it is heavy in the case, and a contra stand is very important for performanes and rehersals. Get different brands of reeds since all contras have their own personality. Make sure you gather as many fingering charts you can find to get the most of your contra... alternate fingerings are almost a must on faster passages(using the 3 octave keys). Even though it doesn't have Fox or Heckel stamped on it I love playing it. It was an excellent investment for me. I love my Amati Contra. It is a great instrument. With the right reed and practice you will enjoy playing it like I do....
I purchased this contrabassoon for a community orchestra. As it is the cheapest one in the market (except for 'something like contrabassoon' from China), I did not expect much for the horn. I have played Fox and Adler contrabassoons, and this Amati can beat them regardless of the price. However, contrary to my expectation, this horn was amazing! Firstly, Its tone was beautiful. With this horn I could produce well-tuned sounds of wide dynamics ranging from pp to fff with a proper reed. As it was bought new, the sound is somehow edgy especially in the lower register. But I expect it will get round with aging.
Bought the Amati as a retirement present 5 years ago. It is well made, in tune and good dynamic range. I'm an oboist who plays all the woodwind. Have played many concerts on contra over the last 5 years and have thoroughly enjoyed myself. For someone who wants to experiment with contra or double this is probably the cheapest way in to an enjoyable musical experience
This contra plays amazingly well for the price. It needed some additional set up from a technician. Case is poor- large, bulky and poorly constructed. Recommend purchase of a padded gig bag.Intonation is largely ok. Beatiful finish on bell. I think you will be delighted.
