The Amati bassoons are such a great value....I played on one through HS and partially through college. Big sound, the left thumb keys look different than a normal heck copy but you have to try this horn!
Case is good. Wood finish is excellent. Keywork looks very nice. When I tried to assemble it, the corks on the long joint were so thick that my repairman had to sand them down. It was obvious it had never been play-tested. After a few days of trying to play it, it was so badly out of adjustment that I had to take it to the repairman again. Now that I've got it into playing condition, I really like the horn.
I bought an Amati ABN41 back in the early 90's and was extremely happy with this instrument. The wood is of excellent quality and the finish is durable (several layers of lacquer). The key work is excellent. Include whisper key lock, rollers on left pinky finger keys, rollers on all right hand thumb keys, and rollers on right hand pinky keys. The wing joint has protective hard rubber coating in bore and tone holes. The same along the boot joint on wing joint side. The instrument has excellent intonation across the low to high registers. The low and mid registers are very smooth and rich. My Amati came in a hard shell (metal with hard plastic coating) with excellent storage space. Over the years, I only had wear on the whisper key and had to replace the crutch a few times (can break after long hours of practice).
Since $$ was a concern when wanting to buy a step up bassoon from the one I started on, I did a fair amount of research & found that the Amati generally got good reviews. I was able to contact their distributor in the U.S. & got many of my add'l questions answered promptly. The bassoon has been 100% reliable so far - only needed to sand the corks a bit & oil the bore when I got it out of the box. I didn't tell the members of the orchestra I play in that I got a new bassoon, but I rec'd several compliments on my "improved sound" at the first rehearsal I took it to!
I am very satisfied with this bassoon. I used to have an old bassoon in bad shape, but with this Amati bassoon, I'm making music, not just sounds. It's a great bassoon for the price and to use for high school/college. For more serious players, once you adjust your reeds if needed, there's not much more you could ask for from this instrument. The look of the instrument is striking; it is beautifully crafted. I suggest buying silk swabs to remove moisture from your instrument after playing because the fuzzy ones the bassoon comes with tend to leave lint in the wing joint.
