I bought an Amati a couple years ago. For the price, it can't be beat. However, the mouthpiece that came with it is worthless. Spend the money on a decent alto mouthpiece. Once I learned the alto itself, many intonation problems took care of themselves. It truly is a different instrument. But with the right mouthpiece, it has a nice sound - more like a small trombone than like a big trumpet. The slide is very good. The case is badly designed - the form-fit for the bell is on the bottom half of the case. So it doesn't sit level when placed on a table. I would like to see Brasswind offer a suitable replacement case for alto trombones. That aside, this is a good value.
I purchased an Amanti Alto Trombone last summer and have been impressed with the tone of the instrument. It is a transition from Tenor but if all else fails, music can be transposed and slide positions are easier to find. It has more of a trombone tone than the soprano trombones and makes the higher ranges easier to reach.
If you need an Eb alto trombone for infrequent orchestral work, this could be your horn. Slide mechanism is fine, but the positions didn't seem to be consistently in tune through each partial.
This is a good alto trombone. It's got a bright, clear sound that's easy to color and blend. The slide to bell ratio is good, and it has a true 7th position. For the price, it's a fantastic buy and well worth a look.
