This is an outstanding all around instrument; intonation is right on; the quality is excellent and it is an easy blowing horn; I like this trumpet as much as my Strad and it allows me a three half step higher range.
My Amati has an exception silver plated finish with the top and bottom caps of brushed silver...real cool. The heavy bracing is also exceptional. The horn isn't all that heavy, even for a person in his eighties. Having owned many brass instruments in past years, I can truthfully state that this horn is as good as any and better than most and costs less than most. I have come to respect the Amati workmanship and most reasonable prices. Their quality extends to woodwinds also, some of which I have purchased for schools.
This heavy trumpet has a beautiful dark tone, excellent projection, and is a joy to play. I tried it with many mouthpieces from my collection, and the sound is especially luscious with the Bach mouthpieces. I'm using the Bach 10-1/2C with it, whereas I had been using a Giardinelli 10B with another lighter, brighter instrument. In the past 37 years, I have owned and played many, and I like this better than my Schilke and Yamaha pro horns. In sound and playability, it most closely resembles the Mt. Vernon Strad I played in college. I hadn't heard of the Amati brand, bought based on reviews of it and the Giardinelli 812, which is essentially the same horn re-badged. I'm very pleased.
The Amati ATR 604IHS-O (why so many letters?) professional trumpet is an outstanding instrument. Apart from the flawless craftsmanship and solid construction, valve action is smooth, quiet, and fast; projection is great. My first one came with a dented bell, but I tried it out and it was just a great horn to play. I've sent it back but am getting a replacement. First and third valve slides (or expression slides) move effortlessly. In fact, if it could be considered a flaw, the third valve slide moves almost too easily. Once these trumpets catch on, their prices will go up. For instance I bought the Amati AFH 601I-O pro flugelhorn and that's a buttery smooth instrument. In fact, it was because of how pleased I was with the Amati flugelhorn that I decided to try their 604 trumpet. Like any instrument, some people will gel with a horn and others won't. For example, I bought a Kanstul C trumpet that I never really got to like even after 3 years of playing it. Someone else is thrilled with it now. But if you're in the market for a solid pro trumpet at a student intermediate price, give this one a try. With WWBW's 45-day return policy, you can't really lose! BTW, as far as the ATR 604IHS-O trumpet, I get that ATR stands for Amati TRumpet, and that HS likely stands for Heavy, Silver, but what's I and O? Instrument? Oh-boy!? :-) Anyway, you owe it to yourself to try this quality European horn from the Czech Republic.
This trumpet was an impressive purchase and was even better playing it. I can't believe how much easier it is to play than my old trusty yamaha. I think it has alot to do with the mouthpiece, it is definately comparable to a Monette! I Highly recommend it!
