When I heard about this mouthpiece, I was really excited to try it out and get it. So I bought it and started using it. At first I used it for all types of playing. My range did indeed go up (I went from being able to play a double C easily to playing it with no effort, and I could play a few more notes above it) But after I while, I found that it wasn't a good mouthpiece for all around playing. Playing softer, quieter tunes didn't fit well with it. So I started doing a switch back and forth from mouthpiece to mouthpiece. From lead chart to ballad. Soon, my lips started to feel weird after a mouthpiece switch. Before too long, I just went back to playing on my 3C, and then sold the asymmetric. I would only recommend this for people who only play lead, or people whos embochure are naturally the way that this mouthpiece requires. Most people play half upper lip, half lower lip. This mouthpiece requires 1/3 2/3. Only but this if you play that way to begin with.
This mpc is miraculous. It is the only mpc I use on picc. I use a Warburton cornet shank for the Schilke picc, and that works fine.
Both range and endurance are immensely improved over any conventional mpc, and the tone is not overbright and hard as is the case with other shallow-cup eauipment. Example: My endurance is weak, and on Handel's "Bright Seraphim" I've always sweated blood by the end of the repeat. Now I can do the whole thing three times through back-to-back with all repeats, no strain
I'm convinced the reason the Lead works better than the 3C+ is the Lead's larger diameter. On my E3L I actually get dramatically better midrange and lows with the Lead than with the 3C+. Now if John would only make a 3C+ and an Opera with the rim diameter of the Lead, or perhaps even a bit larger, that would be magic.
I had the pleasure of speaking with the inventor of this mouthpiece, John Lynch. He is both a lead trumpet player, and a real life "rocket scientist", formerly an engineer for NASA. By applying physics to trumpet embochure, he developed this product. I tell people if I couldn't get another one, I would not sell mine. It is just that good. Having said that, it is also the only mouthpiece you will ever buy that comes with (and needs) an instruction manual. I had to change my embouchure slightly to get the full benefit of the design (unknowingly, it turns out I was using a "French horn" type embouchure. None of my instructors, through college, ever pointed that out.)I used it ot play lead in a rapid fire funk band doing back to back Earth Wind and Fire and Tower of Power covers and could not have survived without it.
I was skeptical when I heard about this mouthpiece. I read all the reviews and listened to some songs where it was used. I decided I would get it. When I put it on my lips it didn't feel odd. I started playing in the mid-range and it sounded just like my old Bach 7C. I started to go up the staff. I got to what was my limit, a double G above the staff. I didn't have to strain to get it like in the past. I started playing around in the upper range and eventually was able to play a double C. This is the best mouthpiece I have ever played on. It is worth every penny. Great dark tone in the low range.
