Aulos Recorders for DisabledThe 309Af Alto recorder is designed for players with finger disabilities. In addition to the head piece, there are six separate sections for holes, fitting smoothly into one another. By rotating the holes and plugging certain holes, the recorder can accommodate fingers that are missing or do not function normally. Once adjusted for an individual's hand, the sections may then be glued into permanent position. A person with any six usable digits can play an entire chromatic scale from c' to a'''. If seven fingers are available in any combination, the range is extended by three semitones. Made of ABS plastic and comes with a dark brown body with ivory colored mouthpiece, ring and foot.

I recently purchased the Alto recorder. The rotating segments are ingenious, however, do know that it is possible to have seven digits and not be able to play the full range of the instrument. I have an unaffected left hand and two fingers on my right hand. With my left hand on top, I cannot use my left pinky, and so I do not have enough fingers to use the double hole on the foot joint. I was surprised that the top finger hole was not directly across from the thumb hole (It sits a quite a bit lower).
The fingering system is more difficult than a normal recorder.
Starting with A above middle C, the fingerings require a half hole thumb. I notice a difference in tone color and intonation in this register, though I believe this is, in part, caused by my technique as a beginner on this instrument.
I plan on comparing this instrument to standard models, in the event that I prefer the more regular fingering system and sound quality of those instruments. Both instruments pose challenges for missing fingers, and I am not fully convinced that the adapted model is best for me. (Keep in mind that every hand situation is different!) Kudos to Aulos for venturing into the field of adapted instruments! I challenge them to upgrade the model!
