New Azumi

Azumi flutes are named for the mountainous region of Azumino, Japan where Altus flutes were born. Azumi flutes offer a high quality, professional sounding flute, at a price that is perfect for the advancing musician. These flutes are richly inspired by the exceptional design of Altus flutes.

Altus flutes were designed by Shuichi Tanaka in 1981. Tanaka was himself an exceptional flutist who developed a rich appreciation for vintage flutes. His taste was particularly drawn to the Louis Lot flutes of France and their designs are the basis for all of Tanaka’s conceptions. He teamed up with flutist William Bennett who also had a passion for antique flutes. With inspiration from the vintage designs, recommendations from Bennett, and his knowledge of modern instrument technology, Tanaka developed the Altus flute. Professional musicians fell in love with this flute’s ability to produce a classically French sound. In 2006, Tanaka recognized the need for a more affordable version of this instrument and introduced the first Azumi flute.

Ideal for the advancing musician who desires a professional tone, Azumi flutes set themselves apart in numerous ways. The most distinct feature is the inclusion of the Altus Z-Cut Professional Headjoint on each instrument. This rectangular, broad headjoint produces a quick response and the dramatic tone associated with professional instruments. Another remarkable feature of the Azumi flutes is the use of Britannia silver in the headjoint. This material is a .958 alloy which offers the highest percentage of silver among flutes of this class. The silver adds a sweet tone which is unmistakable among flute aficionados.
