Viennese immigrant Vincent Bach arrived in the United States after World War I with only five dollars in his pocket. He relied on his talents as an orchestral brass player and his degree in mechanical engineering to start a business producing professional-quality mouthpieces—which were difficult to obtain at that time.

Born Vincent Schrotenbach in 1890, Bach was the stage name he adopted while touring Europe and later kept in the U.S. while playing with the Boston Symphony and Metropolitan Opera House.

Making mouthpieces led to making trumpets in 1924, and in 1928 to the manufacturing of fine Bach trombones as well. Musicians select Bach trumpets and trombones to this day because of their exceptional tonal color, balanced response, and superb projection. Bach mouthpieces are chosen for many reasons; they are uniformly precise, assuring dependable centering for pitch.

In response to pro musicians’ expression “that’s a real Stradivarius,” to describe his brass instruments, Vincent Bach created the professional-level Bach Stradivarius line of brass instruments.

In 1961, at age 71, Bach sold his firm to the Selmer Company with the promise that the Bach tradition of excellence would be retained. Today, true to the founder’s vision, Conn-Selmer, Inc. follows Bach’s designs when crafting Bach brass instruments and mouthpieces.
