I've played many Bach 196's and find them to be great little horns with balanced resistance for playing high notes all night long. The valves are springy and fast, the tone is large for a piccolo with a crisp and brilliant sound as it should be, and it takes a trumpet shank mouthpiece making it an easy switch from your Bb/C trumpet. The 196 also comes with its own hard case which is handy when you have a piccolo gig and don't need a big case. Of the "compact design" piccolos, both the Bach and Selmer play far better than the competitors of similar design. Choose lacquer for a warmer more mellow tone, or silver a brighter more alert sound.
