Great thing to have. Since the valve casing is where your hands are, it's a really good idea to have one of these on your trumpet to help the silver finish last longer. I would not recommend buying the lace-up model because the metal rings do cause scratching. The Velcro is great, though.
I purchased the lace up leather valve cover for my Bach form my local music store (I got the lace up model since it looked better). I t looked great, kept my left hand from being do cold on the field, and kept the horn from tarnishing. The only drawback was that the rivets that the strings went through scratched my second valve some. I think I'm going to buy a Velcro model for my new (well, at least new to me) Terry Clark Bach Strad Anniversary (#0267, 43 bell, ML).
6 months ago, I got my hands on a beautiful Bach Strad. After spending 4 months of re-polishing the strad constantly, I learned about valve guards from the lead trumpet player in my band. The rings haven't scraped the second valve yet [I have been playing constantly for 2 months with it] and it saved me a ton of time.
I had the Velcro valve guard for about three or four weeks and the Velcro ripped right off. I suggest getting the tie one because it lasts longer. If you are really worried about scratching your second valve then just put the Velcro under the tie on. :) It worked for me.
