This is one BAD "---" trumpet. I recently purchased a Lacquer version, that just plays outstanding. Intonation is wonderful, the response is immediate, and the tone is to die for. From the classical end, to the Jazz-Lead end of the trumpet section, this horn can do it all. I guess you just have to find the right Artisan model, and I did. I don't quite understand all the used instruments I see for this horn, but to each his own. This horn outplayed a Yamaha Xeno I had in my possession at the time. The 20th Anniversary to be exact, and blew it out of the water. I've gone through so many horn models, that I understand the Bach sound and what so many talk about. Truly a fabulous horn.
The Artisan Bb really is the best horn Bach has produced in recent memory. To me, it combines the best qualities of the 37 and 43 bells - it has the natural life and brilliance and fast response of the 43, while retaining the security of slots, focused projection, and depth of tone you find in the best 37's. It has a very malleable sound and plays quite well. In addition, the intonation is a bit better than standard Strads. It's a great playing horn that could work in just about any setting.
I went to ITG with the thought of picking up a new horn that wasn't one of the big manufactures. I wanted something customized and was considering ordering a custom horn from one of the many custom manufactures on the market. I tried several horns from many different makers and found the Bach Artisan to be the best horn for me on the floor. It has a very even tone, extremely flexible feel, and a beautiful look. I use this horn for everything from brass quintet and concert band groups to jazz combos and rock bands. A good friend, who is a tremendous lead player, tried the horn and was nailing notes to the wall that were quite difficult for him on other horns. This horn is very versatile and well worth the extra money compared to the standard strad line IF IT WORKS FOR YOU!!
When I tried the Artisan out the first time I thought it was better than a Stradivarius, eventhough it is a Stradivarius. This instrument plays great and doesn't ever make you want to stop! I like the style, the feel, the playing style, a great double case, it has awesome projection and response for a heavier instrument and doesn't have the 7C mouthpiece. The only things I dislike about the Artisan is that you cannot upgrade the instrument, it is kind of hefty like it may have a gold brass bell. Otherwise I believe that the Artisan is a step up from a regular Stradivarius because it is even more artistic than it was before. Otherwise I would get the clear lacquer just because it sounds better than the silver, but it depends what you do during your gigs!
