Bach Megatone Trumpet Mouthpieces in GoldThe Bach Megatone gold mouthpieces use as their baseline the original Bach mouthpiece designs. They differ in that they possess more than double the outside mass of the original. The greater mass darkens the tone and permits a greater dynamic range than the original. They are additionally equipped with a larger throat that affords less resistance and further enhances the power a player is able to muster. They are popular among pop and jazz players, especially in environments where the horn is not being amplified in a public address system. These particular Bach Megatone mouthpieces are gold-plated versions of the Bach Megatone series. Gold plating provides a very comfortable and flexible feel, cannot tarnish or corrode and warms up faster than a silver plate. Their hypoallergenic properties are also attractive to many players, and they are very beautiful to behold.Bach mouthpieces are designed to meet every conceivable playing need and have for nearly three quarters of a century. A Bach mouthpiece will make a poor instrument play well, a good instrument play better. Volume and excellent intonation, ease of response in the high and low register, rich, uniform timbre throughout the range, and resistance calculated to increase the player's endurance—these characteristics explain why professional artists choose Bach.Because Bach mouthpieces are accepted for their high standard of quality, their numbers are familiar everywhere as designations for certain models and types. Only genuine Bach mouthpieces bear the full inscription "VINCENT BACH" with one of the model numbers.

The Megatones are probably my least favorite line of heavyweight mouthpieces. To me, they are too drastically different from the standard line - the Yamaha GP series is in the right ballpark, but these have too much added weight. The enlarged throat doesn't really help, as that is not the type of resistance that players feel from weight. The Megatone responds more slowly and is harder to shape the sound with. It tends to sound muddy and articulations are dulled.
I have never witnessed a professional playing on a Bach Megatone, but I have seen myriad great players on other heavyweight equipment. Perhaps a Megatone would help a bad trumpet play better, but every student I have switched off of one has played better afterwards.
If you feel you need a heavy mouthpiece, look at other brands.
Just got it in the mail. Fast delivery. Says 10 -15, more like 3 - 5. Bought the 1C. Very happy with. Has a heathy heft to it. Stunning Gold. Can't help but brag to all my friends. If you are iffy about purchasing it over price, don't! Maybe purchase the regular silver. It's cheaper, but it doesn't have the glow to it. But buy a Bach Megatone! Totally worth it! Don't Hesitate! Buy it!
Feel free to email me with questions.
This mouthpiece is incredible, I used the standard 7c, but when I switched to this (5C), it felt really easy to play in the upper register and has a great tone to it, I recommend this to all trumpet players, why stop at the 3C, 1 1/2 is also amazing!!!
Ordered the 1-1/2C mouthpiece and was totally blown away at how it felt. I normally play with a Yamaha 14gp but this mouthpiece blows that one way away. My tone is so much better when playing high E up to C or higher. Great for soloing!
everyone's different, and has different preferences in trumpet mouthpieces - I get that. I've played a 5c Megatone for about 8 years now. I use it and highly recommend it for most playing - orchestra, jazz, quintet, solos - everything except big band lead trumpet. It's responsive, plays evenly in all registers, and the intonation is excellent. The slightly more open throat gives a more open feel to my Bach trumpet, which can be a bit stuffy.
Unlike another reviewer, I know several pro players who play a megatone. I doubt that the gold plating changes the tone, but it's pretty and doesn't tarnish.
