Bach Small Shank Tenor Trombone Mouthpiece
The Bach small shank tenor trombone mouthpiece is among the most popular and reliable in the world. Alto bones (Bach 39) and small bore tenors (.480"-.508" bore like the Bach 6, 8, 12, 16 - lots of jazz and commercials horns in this range) use a small shank mouthpiece. Also using a small shank mouthpiece are medium bore (.525" like a Bach 36) horns. These are common in jazz work, theater work, concert band, brass quintet or even lighter orchestral stuff. A medium bore horn can almost do it all except for true bass trombone parts. If your ax takes a small shank piece, you can't go wrong with this one.

I'm the first chair euphonium at my school. When I started high school, I was issues a Conn curvebelled euphonium with an unmarked mouthpiece. In October of last year (my junior year), I purchased a Yamaha 321 with this mouthpiece (6 1/2AL) and another (Yamaha 51D. I found my tone on the 6 1/2AL was exceptional and I've used this mouthpiece ever since. I've talked with many euphonium players from other schools, and they all speak highly of the 6 1/2AL mouthpiece. I found it has a great tone quality and performs exceptionally throughout all dynamics and throughout the instrument's range; pedal tones and screamer notes included. This mouthpiece is perfectly suited of intermediate level euphonium players.

"Bach Small Shank Trombone & Euphonium Mouthpieces"

I am currently using several Bach small shank trombone mouthpieces with success. On my Conn 18H (.484 bore, 7.5"Bell) trombone I am using an old standard, the 7C with great success. On my King 2103 B3 trombone (.508 bore 8" bell) I have used a 7C for several years, but am now experimenting with a 6-1/2 AL with good success. I have used an 11C with my Yamaha 321S Euphonium, but am also experimenting with a 6-1/2 AL right now. So far so good!!

This mouthpiece should be the starting point in any young Trombone/Baritone/Euphonium players career. I started out on one of these (Bach 5GB) and it got me to the first band in Middle school and kept me there the next year. Once a student starts getting better and goes into High School he should find a new one to use that's more specific to his tone preference, exp (Schilke, Denis Wick...etc). Good luck and happy playing.
