I adopted the first Bari because I didn’t play enough to maintain wood. I loved it, so I switched to the Star when it came out, and it’s even more impressive, especially in the lows. Even if it sucks, at least it’s always the same (especially when you switch horns at gigs). A lot of trouble I had as a kid was that I didn’t know I was fighting the reed half the time, and I didn’t know that manufacturers deliberately package reeds that vary in the same box because players are finicky. I’ve also tried Legere’s synthetic, which was radically different…making the mouthpiece feel somewhat closed/waterlogged to me. (Somebody said legit players prefer Legere, but I ain’t legit.) I believe manufacturers have a generous return policy, so try different brands if you don’t like one. I don’t know why you wouldn’t have a synthetic as a backup. In my opinion, the Bari lasts until you lose it. If you bite it (altissimo stuff; I’m probably a hack), you’ll eventually have to replace it. Understand that the synthetic reed for this recreational player is not a compromise; I like everything about it more than wood. It’s hard to tell if the Bari is brighter; I have a ton of edge on my sound anyway. (My reeds are H/hard.)

This is a must for jazz and blues saxophonists. It's great for onstage gigs the reed stays warm really well and you can keep a nice sound with less moisture. It was my first artificial reed and it is the best so far make sure you get Bari Star.
