The Baritone is a horn in the low brass family pitched in Bb. The tone can be compared to combining the brightness of the trombone and the mellow sound of a euphonium. Often confused and referred to interchangeably with the euphonium due to its similar size and shape, the traditional baritone is actually a much smaller bore size than the modern euphonium. Along with the smaller bore size, a smaller bell size creates a more ‘trombone’ type sound compared to the tenor-tuba like sound of the euphonium. In the brass band world, the ‘British Baritone’ is extremely popular because it combines the bright/crisp tone of the trombones with the musical flexibility of the other valve instruments.
In certain parts of the world, band directors will actually start out students on the smaller bore baritones before ultimately introducing the larger bore euphonium later in their school year. This provides the students with a solid foundation for both physically holding the instrument in a more manageable way and producing a full sound.
