I went through all my schooling with a beginner Holt trombone that really worked out well for me. After lending it out to a friend that shortly thereafter disappeared, I decided that this would be a great time to get something new. While I would love to have a Stradivarius, $1.5-$2K is a little out of my price range. However I wanted something with a F-attachment. I bought the Barrington with very low expectations and the knowledge that I could always return it if it didn't at least meet some minimal expectations. Break downs are as follows: Tone quality: the tone quality is somewhat brassy, it does have somewhat to do with the generic, no-name mouthpiece that is included. I do have a Bach 6 1/2 AL on order so hopefully the brassy sound will mellow out. Slide action: One the slide was lubes with some Trombontine, the slide worked great. No imperfections or grinds can be heard. I was worried most about the slide after reading several Ebay horror stories of grinding and scraping slides that hardly worked. F-attachment: this is one of the weaknesses of this instrument. The attachment is clanky and noisy. Also the open-wrap tubing is almost a full half-step sharp in the default position. The pipe has to be pulled out almost 3 inches just to get into tune. This is inconvenient since the horn will not fit back into the case until the tuning pipe is put back to the default position. Tuning Slide: only work marginally well, is very stiff even after lubing. Once removed, is almost impossible to put back it. Case: While the case looks nice and is quite functional, the zipper does not work very smoothly and I doubt that it will last more than a few months. Overall: I am impressed with the quality of the horn. I wasn't expecting a whole lot for the price but was willing to take a gamble and certain was surprised and impressed. I was really impressed with the slide. The tone is decent and should get better once I get a decent mouthpiece. It does require a large shank mouthpiece.(something that the website does not clarify and is why I don't have a good mouthpiece yet since I had only ordered the small shank) If you are looking for a decent horn with an f-attachment, this is a great value. If you are looking for Stradivarius quality for $1K less, you will be disappointed.

when I read the reviews on this trombone, I was a bit worried. both said there was a problem with the case. I however, have had no problem opening and closing my case. second, they said the tone quality was not top notch. on this I agree, but it isn't the horn itself, but the mouthpiece it comes with. it would be very wise to invest in a mouthpiece of higher quality, like a Bach 6 1/2 AL. another concern I had was the tuning slides. Tim said that they didn't work smoothly, and that the f attachment was very sharp. I found that not to be the case. that probably has more to do with how you play than anything else. I also found that the slide worked quite well. I haven't had any problems with it. I haven't encountered anything wrong with the f key either. the finish was also very nice. maybe I just got the Uberbone, or maybe the ones previously written about were flukes, I don't know. bottom line: I think it a very good buy. not the greatest, but it's a god balance of price and quality. in combo with a new mouthpiece, very much worth the price.

trombone all throughout high school and college community ensembles Oregon

I played trombone all throughout high school and college, and my horn was stolen during my senior year. I haven't played since, but have wanted to pick it up again to play in local community ensembles. I really haven't got the spare cash to drop $1500+ on a new horn, though I did play several while looking. I chose the Barrington because I couldn't believe the price, fully expecting it to be a pile of junk. Boy was I happily surprised. This horn is exceptional. I rate the slide a 90/100, not perfect but quiet and smooth and better than some slides on horns that I've played for three times the price. The tuning slides all move smoothly, but not loose, and the trigger is quick and quiet. The horn is well built and sturdy, and definitely not thin brass. The lacquer is smooth and very professional looking. I play on a gold-plated Schilke 51c4, and this horn sounds great with it. The case is fine, I don't care for the way the slide goes into it, and will probably replace it. All in all, much more horn than you'd expect for its price. If you're looking for a good horn at a reasonable price, you can't lose with this one.

I got this trombone when I was in 10th grade. I still occasionally play it and it still has good tone. It is even better with a good mouthpiece such as a large bore Bach 6 1/2 AL. It has a good slide and trigger. Great buy for the price.

I've been impressed overall by this horn although one of the screws on the f attachment keeps working out. That's the biggest gripe I have about it. Overall I'm pleased with it. It has a good sound and smooth slide action. I use a Bach 6 1/2 AL mouthpiece with it. For the price it's a good value.
