I might have to invest in this instrument because have been looking for a sax, but I have not had the time to go to stores and look around. So I decided when I had time in between the papers and things at school I could just get on my lap top and look around.
I really believe this a very nice instrument and I believe it will play beautifully.
I bought this saxophone about 3 years ago and it was great for me as a beginner. I would definitely recommend this as a great model for beginners as well as intermediate players.
I decided I simply had to try one. There is a bewildering variety of Chinese Saxes out there, but I decided to go with one from an established vendor like WWBW. Its intended use is as a back up horn to my Selmer Mk 6, and as the principal horn for my 9th-grade son for use in his school jazz band
Make no mistake: this horn itself no lightweight. In fact it actually weighs more than a Selmer Mk 7?which is a very heavy alto! The Barrington is also nicely built and beautifully finished--as well as robust--with no rough edges to speak of. The action is rather high and quite stiff, but this is true of most instruments out of the box. A little tweaking by an experienced owner or any music shop tech can fix that.
I tried several aftermarket mouthpieces, and found the horn played best with a Selmer S-80 C*. (Incidentally, the neck cork seems to be oversized. The factory-provided mouthpiece fits fine?but anything else has to be forced on and liberal and repeated applications of cork grease are necessary. If a younger or female musician is going to be playing this horn with a non-factory mouthpiece, the cork should be turned down a bit, as it will otherwise be difficult for all but the strongest hands to adjust or remove the mouthpiece once it is on.)
The example I was sent is leak free (as tested with a leak light) and blows freely, from low Bb to high F#. The intonation is surprisingly good. Indeed, the upper and lower octaves are very much in tune with themselves--though not so much with each other, the lower being predictably a bit flat.
The tone it produces has nothing like the complexity of a professional horn?certainly not like my MK 6. Still, the timbre is acceptably pleasant, while the projection is downright excellent. This horn speaks forcefully with a clear (if over-focused) voice. Budding soloists will like the authoritative way it carries over the band.
Speaking as an experienced player?both classical and jazz--I find nothing to fault in this alto, especially factoring in the price. It could easily qualify as an intermediate-level instrument. Unless your student has very discerning ears, and a need (or desire) for a more nuanced tone, this instrument should do the job.
Nice looking instrument. Quality is not bad for this price range. The instrument plays in tune and has a good sound. Excellent for the price.
Having shopped for and bought multiple band instruments for my sons during middle school and high school I know that this price is incredible. Speak to any band teacher and they will confirm that if the alto sax is the instrument your student wants then this is the instrument you should purchase. Great price for a great entry level instrument!
