Great backpack style case and all accessories are included, which is nice. One of the keys is sticky, but I think it was due to glue from packaging or pad work. It plays very well in tune with itself. I would definitely recommend a different mouthpiece, but for a beginner or occasional player like myself, this sax is a great buy.
I have played on a Selmer Mark VI for my whole life, and was hesitant to change because of the price. Boy, was I wrong. This is the best saxophone I have ever played, or seen for that matter. It fell out of my truck going 50 mph and the tone was not affected one bit! What a buy!The ONLY downside is sometimes when I'm improving it makes funny noises, but thats probably just me.
I need this Barrington alto sax again because the one I bought in February has been bought from me yesterday due to the sound ?
This saxophone truly is as beautiful as in the picture -- the lacquer is a nice, deep gold with an engraving on the bell. However, there are some faults that come with the saxophone, and whether it was just the one I recieved or the true make of the saxophone is still in debate. The one I recieved had an excessive "sizzling" noise when playing the upper register, excluding the notes E and F. The pad that opens near the top of the saxophone is a little too rounded and fat, causing the air flow to bounce off and make this noise; also, this slightly affected the playing. Notes in the upper register are a tad harder to get out and "sing". Also, middle C tends to sit a bit flat. As far as the sizzling goes, a replacement of the pad helps, but doesn't completely rid the horn of the incessant sound. Another thing I noticed was the pads were a bit sticky, but after running a dollar bill through them a few times they hold up on their own quite well. The horn is indeed free-blowing, with little resistance, apart from the upper register air sizzling. It stays relatively in tune as well, yet the cork on the neck is a tad oversized. Volume-wise, it's able to play softly as well as loud quite simply, without too many hesitations or "chips" in notes. The high F# key is an added bonus as well, along with the case the horn comes in. The tone on its own is nothing incredibly special, though it's very nice, round, full, and dark. If you're looking for a very distinct jazzy tone, this horn isn't for you -- however, it does have the best of both worlds, able to capture both classical and jazz attitudes. Overall, the saxophone is very nicely built and sturdy, beautful, and apart from the setbacks noted above, a very nice alto sax. Adding in the free gifts (namely the ligature) and the price, I would recommend the saxophone to players short on cash or are in need of a replacement student model/intermediate model horn. I very much enjoy this instrument; I really like the feel of the keys, as well as the dark tone it possesses. If you don't feel the horn is for you, WWBW has a 45-day return policy. All in all, the saxophone is a good fit for a budding student/intermediate horn on a budget, and it delivers slightly higher than what the price tag suggests. My setup is a Selmer S80 C* mouthpiece with #4 Vandoren reeds for concert band, and for jazz I use #3 JAVA reeds with a Vandoren V16 A6 small chamber mouthpiece.
I have to admit that I was skeptical of this instrument at this price. After receiving the instrument, I unpacked it and at first was sure that the keys were bent as all of them were "corked" closed. After examination, I saw the corks, removed them and everything has worked fine since. I did notice that the mouthpiece had to go in a long way in order to get it up to pitch, but after that, everything has been fine. Overall, the tuning has been excellent. I like the tone that the instrument has and would certainly recommend it to others. Previously, I have played mostly Selmer Saxophones being a former instructor of woodwinds at the Naval School of Music. The overall key action seems just a bit stiff but certainly is no problem. The left hand little finger keys for low C#, B and B-flat are easier than other saxes that I have played. I also find that the response for these lower notes are excellent. Based on the price and the quality, I give the instrument a good 5 stars.
This sax makes lovely sounds, is sleek and holds up well!
I decided I simply had to try one. There is a bewildering variety of Chinese Saxes out there, but I decided to go with one from an established vendor like WWBW. Its intended use is as a back up horn to my Selmer Mk 6, and as the principal horn for my 9th-grade son for use in his school jazz band Make no mistake: this horn itself no lightweight. In fact it actually weighs more than a Selmer Mk 7?which is a very heavy alto! The Barrington is also nicely built and beautifully finished--as well as robust--with no rough edges to speak of. The action is rather high and quite stiff, but this is true of most instruments out of the box. A little tweaking by an experienced owner or any music shop tech can fix that. I tried several aftermarket mouthpieces, and found the horn played best with a Selmer S-80 C*. (Incidentally, the neck cork seems to be oversized. The factory-provided mouthpiece fits fine?but anything else has to be forced on and liberal and repeated applications of cork grease are necessary. If a younger or female musician is going to be playing this horn with a non-factory mouthpiece, the cork should be turned down a bit, as it will otherwise be difficult for all but the strongest hands to adjust or remove the mouthpiece once it is on.) The example I was sent is leak free (as tested with a leak light) and blows freely, from low Bb to high F#. The intonation is surprisingly good. Indeed, the upper and lower octaves are very much in tune with themselves--though not so much with each other, the lower being predictably a bit flat. The tone it produces has nothing like the complexity of a professional horn?certainly not like my MK 6. Still, the timbre is acceptably pleasant, while the projection is downright excellent. This horn speaks forcefully with a clear (if over-focused) voice. Budding soloists will like the authoritative way it carries over the band. Speaking as an experienced player?both classical and jazz--I find nothing to fault in this alto, especially factoring in the price. It could easily qualify as an intermediate-level instrument. Unless your student has very discerning ears, and a need (or desire) for a more nuanced tone, this instrument should do the job.
I am impressed with this saxophone. I am a clarinetist that wanted to learn to play sax for fun. I was looking for a cheap instrument to get by for awhile because I didn?t want to spend thousands of dollars on something that I would likely not get into fully. I found this sax online and thought it was a joke, since the list price was nearly one thousand dollars but it was on sale for two hundred. I bought my clarinet on this site a few years ago, a Buffet, and it was one of the best purchases that I have made. I knew Woodwind and Brasswind was reliable and customer friendly so I decided to give the Barrington a shot. Boy, am I glad I did! This thing plays great and I had my sax teacher who teaches me clarinet too, look at it and he plays professionally. He was so impressed he's even thinking about getting one. The mouthpiece included is great too. I got the steal of my lifetime!
I wasn't sure what to expect when I ordered this saxophone but I was very pleasantly surprised.
I recently bought a Barrington Student Sax for my daughter. She was thrilled with how easily it played. We thought when she first played it that the C# and C sounded odd. Her High School band director confirmed it - the C# was way sharp and the C was extremely flat. Thinking it was just that horn, we sent it back, got a replacement. Same problem. So we've given up on the Barringtons. Needless to say we are disappointed after having read all of the positive customer comments.
