I initially abhorred this bass. The finish work was rather sloppy, the adjustable bridge had some initial problems and the strings provided were absolute garbage. However, I have to say that after playing this bass daily for a whole semester (during my student teaching experience); I was shocked at how much I enjoyed the instrument. I am a high-school orchestra director and would whole-heartedly endorse the purchase of this instrument (My main instrument is double bass btw.). Although it lacks certain social graces, you are getting a nice, very playable instrument with an ebony fingerboard. You probably can sell one of the old Kays at your school to a jazzer for about 3k and purchase 3 of these basses new. Just make sure to swap out the strings initially and make sure that the adjustable bridge works--it comes with the action set a little low for my taste, but the instrument is extremely playable.
I'm an electric bass player and I bought this about 7 months ago as my first upright. Really the one reason I bought it was for the tone - that woody, growly, acoustic mwah sound. This bass didn't have it at first, mostly I think because of the not-so-great stock strings and the fact that the bridge was not a great match for the fingerboard. By which I mean that the different strings had different relationships to the fingerboard and so played and sounded noticeably different from each other. Also, the tone was just tinny and dull, and the bass in general was just not that easy to play. But after working on it a little - mostly filing, sanding and adjusting the bridge a million times - and a modest upgrade in strings (D'Addario Pizzicato), it's great. In fact, it's almost perfect for what I bought it for. For a plywood bass it sounds deep and rich, either plucking it near the bridge or up on the fingerboard, and it's a pleasure to play (pizzicato only). Having bought a Scratch and Dent, it was ridiculously cheap (in the world of upright basses, anyway). The little bit of extra money and time I put into it was the trade-off I suppose, but now I have an upright that has the sound I was after and that's a pleasure to play. I suppose it looks a little unrefined in terms of craftsmanship and materials, but it does have a strong vibe of its own which I really like. Some miscellaneous notes: On the adjustable bridge I found that the spindles on the little wheels you turn to raise or lower the action actually bend fairly easily if you're not careful about religiously keeping the bridge perpendicular to the body. Also, there was some slight unevenness in the fingerboard but nothing that gets in the way. My experience with WWBW was overall favorable although for reasons I won't get into I thought they played a little fast and loose with the Scratch and Dent stuff. Considering the size and bulkiness of the boxed bass, delivery was handled expertly. Thumbs up.
