"Very good tone and affordable."

I really like this viola, it has a really warm tone, and I suggest buying a new case and bow from your local music shop because the one that comes with it isn't best for an advancing student; this viola, is wonderful though, it still sounds good in higher positions, even on the A-string in 7th/8h position. I bought this viola in 2006, and at FIRST I was disappointed because when it was shipped to me from the mainland (I live in Hawaii), the box it came in wasn't packaged well enough. There wasn't any support near the bridge of the viola and the A string was unplayable as it was bent with a tight crease; HOWEVER, I fixed all that by straightening the bridge and replacing the string. This viola is worth it!

"You Get What You Pay For"

The Model 50 has a viola sound in contrast with a violin sound, and its sound is reasonably uniform throughout its range w/o a nasal whine or serious fade out on the A string. There are some areas - the pegs, neck, and trimming around the f holes on my purchase - where the finish is lacking to varying degrees, but everything works and has a good enough feel. The tuners are very good quality. They save a lot of time and have not produced any rattles or compromises in sound quality so far. What looks like wood grain on the photos of the top plate are actually closely spaced striations made with a roller tool. All seams are tightly glued in my purchase. Rather than breaking the strings that come with the Model 50, use a simple process of tuning them a 5th low (F-C-G-D) on day one, tune up a major 3rd (A-E-B-F#) on day two, and bring them fully up to pitch (C-G-D-A) on day three. Be sure to position the bridge correctly (there's a small mark in the varnish on the top plate which is close enough for horseshoes) and keep it perpendicular to the top plate and parallel to the fingerboard. When the strings do break from age and finger sweat, replace them with better quality strings. To improve the sound, have a technician check the position of the sound post and replace the bridge with one trimmed thinner and cut from better wood. The bow is adequate for student beginners, but a well-balanced carbon-fiber bow should be considered for older players and year two students. The case is fine as long as you don't plan to throw the kit around or put it on display for bragging rights.

"Nice Instrument at an affordable Price!!"

I purchased this viola for my 13 year old son about a week ago, and we are very pleased with the quality and sound of this viola. Excellent for beginner and intermediate students, the only concern was that we had to get new strings because the ones that came with the instrument (D and G) broke while tuning them at the classroom. Even though, I recommend it to every one, it is worth the price!!
