I've been using my Benge picc for about 20 years. It's far better than the Selmer (Andre's original type)that I started with. Much larger dynamic range, better in tune, immensely stronger 1-4 low concert D. I had the factory shorten the 3rd slide so it now gives a perfect top-of-staff concert F#, which was impossible otherwise. Top- of-the-staff concert E is a bit flat but can be pulled up. Other notes well in tune. Compared to my Schilke P7, the Benge's high register is easier, endurance is better, can play both louder and softer. BUT the Schilke with beryllium bell has better sound (Benge is a hair on the nasal side), so I use that wherever I don't need the 4th valve.
I love my UMI Benge piccolo trumpet. It is fantastic! The UMI Benge piccolo trumpets are better than the L.A.Benge piccolo trumpets. This is a horn that is a lot of fun to play. It plays in tune. It takes a trumpet mouthpiece. Has a lovely toy trumpet sound, great for weddings, and for the person who only needs to play the piccolo trumpet every now and then.
As my first Pic I'm not sure I'll be much help, but here is why I purchased this horn,PRICE! As my first Pic I just couldn't see spending a ton on something I won't be using full time for at least a few years. I tried ALL the horns in this price range, new and used, and found that even some of the better used horns were not as nice as this Benge. I had my trumpet teacher test my new horn just in case. In his professional words, he said that this horn is a great horn overall. Intonation is very good compared to many horns. All I had to do was set the main tuning slide and play. Rarely did I have to worry about adjusting the other slides and/or use alternate fingerings. The tone is bright and clear and valve response was fast and tight. About the only thing that would make this horn far better than its rivals @ $1500+ would be a 1st/3rd hook/slide. Assuming UMI holds up to the strict standards that was once the proud trademark of Benge, TIME WILL TELL!
Some players think the UMI Benge picc plays even better than the pre-UMI horns, and I would agree. Mine plays in tune and has an easy upper register, especially since I added a Blackburn A leadpipe. In short, this horn easily plays as well as other, newer models costing twice as much.
