The quality and technicality of Berg Larsen has made them a brand synonymous with handcrafted saxophone and clarinet mouthpieces. Since its inception in 1945, Berg Larsen has become one of the most well respected designers and manufacturers of mouthpieces.
Berg Larsen was himself a professional musician who began experimenting with reeds while living and working in London. The first mouthpieces that he developed were made from ebonite. He later developed many models in stainless steel and Berg Larsen currently offers numerous rubber mouthpieces as well. While Berg Larsen has since passed, the skill and expertise of his products remains. Highly trained craftsmen employ ten machining processes for the mouthpieces. Each item is carefully hand finished and thoroughly inspected before leaving the factory. Berg Larsen mouthpieces for the saxophone and clarinet have a reputation for longevity and reliability.
There is a range of factors to consider before choosing the optimal mouthpiece. Beyond choosing from stainless steel, ebonite, or rubber, there are also considerations concerning the tip opening, tone chamber, and the length of the facing. The tip opening of a mouthpiece is the distance between the tip of the reed and the tip of the mouthpiece. Generally, a softer reed is used in proportion with a wider tip opening. The size of the tone chamber influences the sound’s edge or brilliance – a larger tone chamber results in a warmer, mellow sound while a smaller one creates bright, sharp tones. The length of the facing is divided into two categories. SMS is the French or European facing and is short with a steep curve. The M or American facing is alternatively long and possesses a flatter curve.
