I too had trouble with the two rings not staying together, I wrestled with them forever and they kept popping apart but I soon came to realize that there is a ridge on the male that the female ring locks onto. You just have to push the male ring into the female ring until it clicks all the way around. It's a little difficult to get them to click but I say that this product is a great buy.
The ring really improves the stability of the head and also gives it a clean look. I also struggled to install it, but found it easy by using (4) 1" c-clamps. Just place masking tape on the outer ring (keeps from scratching ring) at 12, 3, 6, and 9 o'clock, then install your c-clamps at those points and start tightening them evenly until you hear the female ring lock down on the male ring. I hope this is helpful to anyone planning to purchase this.
I followed all the instructions, and when I had it all put together, the female ring kept popping off, so I took the female ring off and the only thing holding the male ring into place is adhesive glue on it.
To install, use the but end of a butter knife and slide it all the way around the female end. I did it wrong with my first head and it rattled causing the head to tear, so I bought a new head and a new ring and it works great. I have on one kit one 6 inch and on another kit two 2 inch holes. the twin two inchers are the way to go. the 6 is a bit too much but makes micing easy. the 2's are a challenge to mic with a bigger mic but still work great.
I installed a 4" chrome O in a 26" in an Aquarian bass head and had no problems finding the "click" and perfect fit. It's best to use a highlighter to mark the hole before attaching the female ring. Use a SHARP Xacto blade, try to cut as close to the inside edge of the ring as possible. I used a little piece of sandpaper to smooth the jagged edge of the hole and the outside of the male insert. Got the click on the first shot, no rips...Perfect !
The boomy sound of my 26" Ludwig is gone and has been replaced with a nice powerful "punch in the chest" thud!
