The Bb Clarinet Bonade Inverted Ligature is a good, low cost ligature. However, I have had a problem with them not fitting my mouthpiece correctly. They work for a while and then become stripped somehow, and slip up the mouthpiece, no longer holding my reed. Also, one of the Bonades I received had a manufacturing flaw in it (I showed it to my instrument repairman). I gave up finally and switched to the Luyben Clarinet Ligature (very low cost, and good sound quality, great for students because it can't be bent - it's plastic!) and then the Vandoren Optimum (a very pricey alternative, but a wonderful investment if you are serious about the instrument). The most important thing is to try out a whole bunch of ligatures, and pick the one with the best sound.
I purchased the Bonade ligature after reading that it had a great sound and was affordable. What wasn't mentioned in the reviews I read was that it slips on the mouthpiece. Mine slipped so much that it was unplayable. It also left scratches in my expensive mouthpiece which I found very unsatisfactory. Not recommended.
This is the best ligature for the money. I've played on this since the end of high shcool (now a junior music major) and its kept me happy for a long time. I also own a Vandoren Optimum, the Bonade is lighter, less fragile, and less expensive with a very similar sound and feel. Get the inverted version. This one will scratch up the front of your mouthpiece and slide off when you first get it. Put some scotch tape in the front inside of the ring and that will fix both problems. Great bargain
This is the best ligature I have tried so far. It gives me wonderful and clear sound as well as good articulation. The sliding up the mouthpiece problem is easily fixed when you moist the reed well enough and slightly push down on the ligature when you are tightening the screw. And after a while you don't even need to do that, it will just stay still. It is an awesome ligature and the price is not bad either
I noticed an immediate improvement in tone quality over all octaves & an improved response, especially in the upper octave. On the suggestion of my technician, (over 40+ years experience), I cut out the center connecting section. This is the part stamped (Bb cl). I noticed even more improvement. I then got a friend of mine, (professional concert level musician), to evaluate the modification & he was surprised at how well it performed. You will find a tendency of the ligature to slip up on some mouthpieces with an extended taper, but I have not had the problem with my Vandoren B45. You do need to take your time installing the ligature, keep the screws tight & the treads lubricated. I just use a little Vandoren cork grease, which works just fine. All in all, if you don't like the modification, you're only out a few bucks. On the other hand, you might really like the outcome.
