I purchased the Bonade ligature after reading that it had a great sound and was affordable. What wasn't mentioned in the reviews I read was that it slips on the mouthpiece. Mine slipped so much that it was unplayable. It also left scratches in my expensive mouthpiece which I found very unsatisfactory. Not recommended.
I have purchased only these ligatures for years and have never had a problem. The most recent one I purchased earlier this year just started sliding up the mouthpiece on it's own. It does not hold the reed in place at all. My fellow clarinetist in the orchestra mentioned the same problem with his Bonade. I am very disappointed that I will have to try something else.
as soon as i played this ligature it was as if all the restraint of my clarinet just dissapeared! on top of that my tone also improved by alot! this is a must have ligature if your serious about your music. the only reasons for getting a four is it being so hard to ajust to your mouthpiece at first and the fact that an optimum vandoren ligature looks kooler is easier to fassen and overall has alittle better sound quality.
Wow! This ligature is a great deal! I tried this for a lesson and instantly got rid of my squeaks and improved my sound a bit. Highly recommend this to whoever has trouble squeaking because too tight of a ligature.
This is the best ligature I have tried so far. It gives me wonderful and clear sound as well as good articulation. The sliding up the mouthpiece problem is easily fixed when you moist the reed well enough and slightly push down on the ligature when you are tightening the screw. And after a while you don't even need to do that, it will just stay still. It is an awesome ligature and the price is not bad either
I have owned 3 Bonade Bb ligatures throughout my musical career. My first two were inverted, and both of them were stepped on by fellow students and crushed. I have noticed that some of the inverted ligatures tend to "ride-up" on your mouthpiece. If this happens to you, return the ligature at once. my current ligature is front-facing and hence has no 'riding' problems. The ligature has a solid sound and is an excellent value.
Bonade is indeed a professional level ligature, in fact, two members of the Minnesota Symphony Orchestra use these ligatures, as does Karen Meffert-Nelson, the principle clarinet and bass clarinet player for the Minnesota Opera.
I've owned many ligatures over the years. It is strange to think that a reed "clamp" can make a difference in tone and response. Every once in a while I will put on another ligature... but I *always* return to my Bonade Inverted ligature. It makes my sound ring. To me there is no other choice. It will scratch the back of your mouthpiece, but a patch will solve this problem.
I noticed an immediate improvement in tone quality over all octaves & an improved response, especially in the upper octave. On the suggestion of my technician, (over 40+ years experience), I cut out the center connecting section. This is the part stamped (Bb cl). I noticed even more improvement. I then got a friend of mine, (professional concert level musician), to evaluate the modification & he was surprised at how well it performed. You will find a tendency of the ligature to slip up on some mouthpieces with an extended taper, but I have not had the problem with my Vandoren B45. You do need to take your time installing the ligature, keep the screws tight & the treads lubricated. I just use a little Vandoren cork grease, which works just fine. All in all, if you don't like the modification, you're only out a few bucks. On the other hand, you might really like the outcome.
THis ligature was recommended to me by my clarinet teacher after she got one and loved it. I got one as well (the regular one) And I love it too! It gives a great tone for the reed and I've noticed that it helps a lot on the jumps in registers. Great Ligature!
This is the best ligature for the money. I've played on this since the end of high shcool (now a junior music major) and its kept me happy for a long time. I also own a Vandoren Optimum, the Bonade is lighter, less fragile, and less expensive with a very similar sound and feel. Get the inverted version. This one will scratch up the front of your mouthpiece and slide off when you first get it. Put some scotch tape in the front inside of the ring and that will fix both problems. Great bargain
