The Boss DS-1 is the best Distortion value on the market! It has been found on the pedal boards of George Lynch, Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Eric Johnson, and Curt Cobain, among others. It produces everything from subtle clipping to extreme distortion. It has a fairly tight bass response with a sharp treble attack and what sounds to be a mid-boost near the 800 khz range. With the DS-1?s tone and drive knobs rolled back and your guitar set to the neck pickup, you can get a singing, sustaining sound reminiscent of Eric Johnson?s instrumental version of ?Cliff?s of Dover?. Turn up the DS-1's gain and treble and switch to your guitar?s bridge Humbucker and you are in 80's Metal territory! This pedal excels when used to add extra sustain and distortion to an already crunchy sound. For example, my single coil Strat does not drive a Marshall Plexi hard enough to get anything more than light to medium overdrive. I use the DS-1 on a low gain setting to drive the amp a little harder and it complements the amp perfectly to produce a wonderfully full and rich distortion tone that reacts well to picking dynamics.
This pedal is very good distortion pedal giving you distortion anywhere from British Punk to Hard Rock. Personally, I don't think its great for just any type of metal, but it can get that tone. The only two problems that I have is that the orange paint chips easily and the pedal kills the battery life very quickly, so I suggest getting an adapter with this. I love the American rock and hard rock tone I can get from this pedal. This pedal is very good and it?s a lot easier to move around then the Big Muff Pi.
