I started out on a rental Selmer and got this clarinet two years later when I entered Marching band. I really wish to get a wooden clarinet to play in college, but until then I think this clarinet is hanging in their quite well. OVERALL, it?s a great clarinet for beginners. It sounds nice for just being plastic and easy playing for beginners up to around 4 years of experience.
I was once playing on my Prestige R13 (actually, it was the first day at my high school with it) and I was searching for a clarinet to use for marching band (spend another $3000 on Greenline? No way). I narrowed my search to 3 clarinets: the Yamaha YCL-250, the Vito V40, and the Buffet B12. After trying the YCL-250 and playing on my R13 for a while, I realized that another one of my friends was playing on a B12. She was kind enough to let me try it. Going in, I was expecting a good, in-tune sound from the clarinet, like most Buffets. I did get the good sound, but the clarinet is extremely sharp. Just about anywhere on the clarinet, altissimo, clarion, ect., you're most likely to be 20 sharp. On the bright side, though, the keywork, like any other Buffet, is beyond belief. The keys feel light and fit around your fingers so well. In short, it's very similar to the R13, but there are intonation flaws that makes this clarinet still considered as a student clarinet. It's more personal preference whether you want the B12 or the YCL-250, but either way, you're going to get a great, inexpensive clarinet.
When choosing your young students clarinet, you want to be sure that they will stick with their instruments for years to come. This instrument gives them that opportunity. I now play on the professional level and still refuse to sell this beautiful instrument. I play on an R13 that's just gorgeous, and when comparing it to my b12, there are minor differences (with a good mouthpiece and reed, of course) Sure you can mess around with other brands and models, but trust me, they will all pale in comparison to the b12. The keywork and sound emission are just unbeatable for a student clarinet. Spend the extra money and save your self the trouble of having to constantly upgrade to a different clarinet.
I bought my B12 clarinet as a second clarinet for outdoor performances. I already have a R13 clarinet that I've had for years. The sound on the B12 is very mellow & rich for a plastic clarinet. I tested the intonation with my chromatic tuner and it is very well in tune compared to other student models I have tried. The keys feel just as nice as my R13; the main difference is that it is of lighter weight because it is made of resin plastic. I wish I had this B12 back when I was in junior high & high school; I played on an old Vito back then. If you are a serious student then I recommend paying a little more for the B12 entry clarinet, you won't be sorry! :)
The Buffet B12 Student clarinet is my first clarinet that I have now been playing on for four years going on to five years here very soon. It is probably THE best choice for a first clarinet you can find. Even while you are still just learning how to play this instrument, it still gives you a great tone when played with enough air. I've personally gone through many competitions with this clarinet and have done absolutely amazing. The only maintenance I have had to do with it so far is replace 2 pads and just re-glue another one that was a little loose. I've also also had to adjust a key once but that was completely my fault that it got bent in the first place. If you assemble it the right way, and with care that won't happen to you most likely. When you get this insrument new, it'll come with cork grease (a must for new instruments), a swab, and a really nice case that has a little accesory space for your reeds and what not. Over the years I have been very happy with this instrument and I will still be using it in marching band in high school here pretty soon! :D So yeah this is an amazing horn for being a student model. just recently I've gotten a wooden clarinet to further my abilities in playing. It is an intermediate model of the same brand, Buffet. If you also decide to invest in an even better instument when you are ready, I would highly suggest sticking with Buffet Crampon, their great. And if you do decide to get a wooden clarinet, still keep your student model for marching because you absolutely NEVER take a wooden clarinet out to march! Never ever! Okay, well I hope this review has helped with your search for a first clarinet because the search is over! Get the Buffet B12, you won't regret it.
