Buffet Crampon Chadash Clarinet BarrelsThe Chadash clarinet barrel is produced and *distributed by the Buffet Crampon company. The unique, two stage reaming process of the Chadash barrel features a poly-cylindrical bore that improves focus and eliminates sharpness in the throat tones. The barrel made from hand selected unstained Dalbergia wood, is of the highest quality that Buffet has in their stocks in Paris. The Chadash barrel is a reverse tapered cone bore similar to the "Moennig" barrel but with a very slow progression of the taper. The boring process for each barrel is done with a single edged French-style reamer that involves two different passes with the borer followed by the polishing of the bore.

I bought a Chadash barrel about 3 years ago. I fell in love with it's combination of fullness, focus, and power. It has the same positive characteristics of many of the better after market barrels of evening out the tone between registers and eliminating much of the stuffiness of the throat tones. Because of it's uniquely shaped bore, it also has the same intonation benefits as the Moennig based barrels with a tighter, slighter darker sound. It has a bit more resistance than the Moennigs barrels, and this allows for more control, especially at extreme dynamics. About a year ago, I switched to a different barrel based on the Moennig bore design to go for a bigger, more colorful sound. After months of working to be heard over the brass section, I just happened to put the Chadash back on and fell in love all over again. While it might not be the most colorful sounding barrel out there, its ability to project effortlessly and play loud without any distortion are unmatched by anything else I've tried. The sound actually focuses more at as I get louder. The ability to project with much less effort allows me to just relax and make music. It's an amazing phenomenon that I've noticed with myself and my students but, when the sound is as effortless as it is with the Chadash, the fingers just work better, also.
The impact of the barrel was intonation improvement where the needle of my chromatic meter stays on target all the way through low E to F over staff. The added benefit was an added richness with center focus. I have worked on my tone all my life and for a few dollars. I feel some how cheated.
I got this barrel to go with my buffet r13. This barrel is spectacular, it not only helps you stay in tune but it darkens your sound so much and takes away all of the stuffiness and gives you a pure note with an unbelievable tone. It also lets you crescendo and decrescendo without any effort and sounds clearer when you get louder instead of distorting the sound. It is not the best looking barrel compared to other brands like backun but is so worth that cash because what matters is the inside not the outside.
This barrel is comparable to the Moenig by Vandoren. They're both wonderful upgrades from a standard barrel, especially if you want to get one that will tune you clarinet a little better. My college instructor (who is a professional clarinetist in her own right) uses this barrel.
