Buffet Crampon Prestige R13 Professional Bb ClarinetThere are certain standard-bearers within the history of musical instrument manufacturers and the Buffet R-13 is one of them. The Prestige R13 takes that heritage as a springboard in its design. The virtuoso expects more from his clarinet than just mechanical perfection. For him or her it is a unique means of expression Buffet Crampon's wealth of experience has led to innumerable improvements being made to the Prestige clarinets which in turn offer musicians greater freedom. The wood is carefully chosen for its acoustic and aesthetic qualities and therefore remains unstained. The undercutting of each tone hole is carried out according to Buffet Crampon's stringent standards. The upper and lower joint tenons come with metal rings which reduce the risk of cracks. The keywork is carefully tried, tested and adjusted by expert craftsmen to work perfectly. The models have G.T. pads, an adjustable thumb rest and an Eb/A lever as standard. The R13 Prestige has a powerful sound and a focused and flexible tone in all registers.

The most complete clarinet sound I have ever had the pleasure of holding in my hands. The superior worksmanship and quality design are both amazing. The clarinet sounds warm and woody in any register at any dynamic level. I use it for both symphonic playing and small groups and never have any trouble blending but always stand out. A must for anyone starting out on the professional level.
I've been playing on this clarinet for about a year and a half now and all I can say is that it's great! Of course, with a wood instrument, intonation is usually inconsitent but mine is surprisingly consistent. Great tone production, dark, rich in chalumeau and lower clarion registers; bright but mellow in upper clarion and altissimo registers. Good feel to the keys; the alternate Eb/Ab key is very helpful. You may have read that the pinky keys use plastic rods for operation and that they break easily but, from my perspective, you'd have to basically bend/break the keys to break the plastic rods! Great clarinet is all I can say!
Experience (because it wouldn't fit below):
*Conference Band (no less than third chair)
*District Music Contest solo rating "1", "2", "3"
*State Music Contest solo rating "1"
*District Music Contest quartet rating "3"
Yes, one can mess around, the LeBlancs play very smoothly and evenly, the standard R13 with silver plated keys has a great sound, the Tosca makes some interesting improvements, but the R13 Prestige Bb Clarinet is still the benchmark. It has the best wood, the best workmanship, and the acoustical properties behind the R13 are still unsurpassed. No clarinet on the market today approaches it in terms of tone color and flexibility.
I have had my Prestige R13 for almost 8 years and I would never trade it for another clarinet. The key work is very comfortable and it is not as heavy as some of the other brands of clarinets. I have found the tone and response to be fairly consistent, even listening to recordings of myself when I was a less mature player. I have used it in band, orchestra, and jazz settings and it has potential for whatever sound you are looking for. I get a nice mellow tone and can play solos without getting too bright. I highly recommend this instrument to serious clarinetists.
I owned this instrument until about 5 years ago when it was stolen when I was at college. But it was the best clarinet I had played. I have played many different types of clarinets and none of them had the tone and the feel. The extra Eb key was wonderful, especially when it came to odd fingering moments. I will own another one of these one day!
