Buffet Crampon R13 Greenline Professional Bb Clarinet with Nickel-Plated KeysThe R13 Greenline series of clarinets follows the same manufacturing process as the 100% grenadilla R13s. Thanks to the addition of carbon fibers, Green Line clarinets withstand admirably to variations in atmospheric conditions (temperature, humidity). The risk of cracking is therefore eliminated. Created in 1994, the Greenline series of instruments has taken advantage of the excess wood remaining from the clarinet manufacturing process. This process of combining grenadilla powder with carbon fibers produces a clarinet that is greatly resistant to environmental change and helps to relieve stress on the African grenadilla wood population. They are very popular with marching bands and with military bands as well. Touring musicians are fond of them for being very accommodating to swings in temperature and humidity from place to place.

Former US Navy Principal Clarinetist. We received 3 Greenlines in New Orleans and they all split inside the bore within the first 6 months. Sounded great, but were worthless. The Evette Crampon that I bought 29 years ago and have played in downpours and extreme heat and cold never gave me a day of trouble. I wouldn't give a plug nickel for a greenline.
I give this an above perfect score due to the great quality and durability. Unlike the other Buffet R13 the greenline can take any climate and temperature change. I've had this beast in below zero temps and above 100 temps. It will take it and keep it's great tone. This is unbeatable in my profession and I highly suggest it to any serious musician.
In Fairbanks Alaska where I live and go to school, the temperatures can be rather extreme which is why I chose the Greenline. I havn't had any problems with it whatsoever. The tuning is excellent, and the sound is dark and warm. Most of my friends that have non-greenline horns have suffered cracks, and have to spend alot more time with instrument maintenance.
The R-13 has been the most popular professional clarinet for many years and it's hard to add any more superlatives. The Greenline plays as well as the grenadilla R-13, even though some people think its tone is a bit darker than the all wood horn. In recent years Buffet switched to Gortex pads on both R-13s and I found that they provide a noticeable improvement in the horn's projection over the natural pads. The use of synthetics in both the body and pads should make the horn more stable and may keep it out of the repair shop a bit longer. The only mystery is why a horn made mostly of grenadilla sawdust, left over from making wood clarinets, should cost as much as one made from selected and seasoned rare wood.
I love this horn!! what more can i say I bought this horn after I suffered 3 cracks in my regular R13. (I guess I pick a bad one, and I baby my clarinets so it was not due to lack of care that this one cracked). I had heard mixed reviews about these for a couple years but I bought one anyway because I couldn't deal with my clarinet cracking. Mine played great right out of the box and when I had everything adjusted to what I wanted I was excited! The sound is great, not stuffy at all, and has a very nice warm and dark tone to it. There is no breaking in period which I love! My notes are in tune all the way up all the time any temperature. This is just a great horn, I would tell everyone to give it a try!
