I have several Buffets, Selmers, and LeBlancs, and they all play smoothly and make my playing effortless. Whoever said he spent over $1K on an overhaul needs to find a new repairman; in the long lives of all of my clarinets, I haven't yet spent $1K on all of my overhauls (cork pads, etc.) and repairs!
I recommend trying out a handful of clarinets before you pick just one because I got my hands on a good one of these clarinets in high school (used even!) and have been playing it for about five years now. Every five years in my career I have gotten a new instrument, but this one is different. I'm finding that I'm not discovering any much better than my own without the price skyrocketing(especially since I have upgraded my barrel, mouthpiece, and ligature to my liking). In other words, I think I have a great body to my instrument and that really can't be replaced.
On a side note, the keys are really sturdy (nickel). The barrel lines up with the body (the bell doesn't, it's actually best at a 180 degree turn for the best tone). The only problem is that my throat tones are a little off, but I worry getting them tuned with throw off the rest of the instrument. However, I can adjust for this pretty easily.
The only thing I wish they had on this instrument is a left alternate Eb key. It's something I've always wanted. The Buffet Tosca and Festival have it I believe if you're looking for that.
The Buffet Tosca might be nice, but I believe that this model is comparable to that one. (On the positive side,it's much cheaper). Honestly, if you want a better clarinet overall than an R13 or a Tosca, a Buffet Festival is probably your best bet, which is not available through WWBW.
I have been using and R-13 for as long as I can remember. Since the first time i have played it, I immediately noticed a huge change in my intonation, ease of play, and tone, as compared to a student clarinet. The R-13 makes you sound like a professional, even if you aren't one. Also, the price of the R-13 is worth every penny. Compared to one of the more expensive models of the R-13 like the Prestige R-13, it is a bargain. I highly recommend this to the serious clarinet player if they want to sound like one of the very best clarinetists out there. And lastly, the R-13 gives you the sound and projection that you would normally get with that one coveted reed. I hope this helps!
I attend an arts high school for jazz and I love this clarinet, I have had this piece for 3 years. The only thing I recommend changing is the ligature. I use a Rovner Jazz ligature which increases the response of the horn dramatically. To keep it looking and playing well, I recommend rubbing it with lemon oil twice a year, trust me it sounds crazy, but it works. I haven't had any problems with it yet.
Obviously I'm not seeing what others are seeing here, because I'm really unimpressed with this horn. In fact, I'd say don't bother spending $3000 on an R13 when there's the flagship Tosca. I can't stand how the horn's so uneven in the upper register, and the low F is so flat it's simply unacceptable for any real professional. The keywork isn't nearly as responsive, and the pads fall apart in a year. I had to spend over $1000 on overhauling this instrument. Don't buy it now and regret it two years later. Patience is a virtue.
