Usually three-piece recorders are preferred because their joints can be pulled apart and pushed in for tuning, and because separating the joints makes cleaning the recorder easier. However, I found this Canto translucent one-piece recorder to be a good option for schools with small budgets (and parents are more willing to buy their child an instrument when it's cheap). With three-piece instruments that I used last year, students wanted to take them apart constantly and trade for different-colored pieces from other students' recorders. More pieces to take apart meant more dropped pieces and more damaged recorders. The price and the security of this one-piece recorder sold me. And, the sound was as good or better than older three-piece recorders that the school had in stock.
I have several class sets of these in my school. Having several colors helps me have a cool looking set for each class. They are durable with a good in-tune sound, and the kids love them. For the price, I would recommend these especially to teachers. The Lyons 25 pack are pretty decent recorders as well if you want a class set and don't have much money, but if you can afford a little extra, I would go with the Canto.
The Canto Soprano Recorder in translucent blue looks as good in person as it does in the pictures. I haven't played one since the 5th grade, so I thought it would be fun to try. With the fingering chart and some downloaded music it wasn't that difficult to make a few notes. I have trouble keeping my fingers fully on the holes, but that's the nature of the recorder. It just takes practice. It is solid, stamped 'Korea' so I am comfortable that it is manufactured safely. For the price you can't go wrong.
