I purchase these for one of my oboe students. I was very impressed with their quality and tone - nice dark sound. Normally, I make my own reeds, but I had heard about these reeds on the IDRS forum and thought I would give them a try. I would definitely recommend the Chartier oboe reeds to oboists who are looking for a quality reed on a budget.
It has great tonal quality and never needs to be scraped or adjusted. Buy this reed!!
These are excellent student reeds. They are very durable and are easy to play. Best for the first time player or student.
Most of the reeds I have bought just can't compete with these - and cost a lot more! I've been playing some new ones for a couple days, and I've been in tune every time, even without an adjustment. Reeds can be so finicky, but these have been holding out so far and performing wonderfully. This happy customer will buy again!
I have been playing the oboe for 10 years. I have also taught oboe privately. I am now a senior in college and struggle to make my own reeds well. These reeds are not bad for the price, they crow well, have a good cut, and look pretty good. I would caution younger players with these reeds to really watch intonation on these reeds. Work hard with a tuner on these reeds to truly develop a tonal center. These reeds have alot of potential for the price. These reeds will be no good for you if you do not develop a tonal center with them. Also, I found the medium reed to be flat and softer than I normally find medium reeds, so that may be somthing to consider when buying this reed, to order the reed just a bit harder than you normally play. A soft flat reed can be adjusted by trimming the tip, but these reeds are kind of short in comparison to some of the more expensive models, so you don't want to risk trimming them. Just a word of caution from an semi- experienced oboist.
These reeds are great, I love them. They're easy to play, and don't need any adjusting. The sound is wonderful as well. Tuning is a little hard at first, you have to do more with your mouth, but after a quarter of an hour or so playing them they're fine.
I have been using these reeds for a little over a year and a half and I love them! I've used other brands prior to this and have have found them inadequate and short-lived. These reeds are durable and produce a lovely sounds from b flat to f. The reed also doesn't dry up super quickly like others in the market. This will always be the first brand I turn to when I have an audition, concert, or just plain playing in class.
I have purchased these reeds on several occasions because the price is good and they take little time to break in. However, I find that they are very inconsistent. I usually buy 2 or 3 at a time and only 1 will be useful to me for quite awhile. I truly believe the only thing that is consistent about them is that they all play flat and require a lot of work to use as a performance reed. I do think they are great reeds for practicing or young students, as they are inexpensive and do not seem to make my mouth tire as much as other reeds.
I am new to oboe and have tried about 10 different brands of reeds in the last 6 months. These are indeed the most consistent and best playing reeds I have used.
These reeds are great for the money. I wouldn't play on them in public, but as an oboist I could practice on them or play on them during a lesson and sound...acceptable. For that price---that's more than great! For younger students or new oboists, they're great. They're usually reasonably balanced, and cheap enough to throw away one or two of the worst ones in a group. They're very easy to touch up for your private students--refine "tip of the tip", clip, thin again... and once in a while add windows. These are the PERFECT choice for band directors who can't buy expensive reeds for their students at school. Overall, there are more expensive choices out there which don't play as well. Kudos to whoever owns Chartier and can manage to mass produce playable entry level reeds. Highly recommended!
