Initially I didn't like the thought of a neck strap, my band director demanded that clarinet section must purchase this strap. Seriously, it corrected our posture and took the pressure off our right hand
This was too short for me and I am a short person. Even on its longest adjustment, it was still too short unless I hold my clarinet higher which then alters everything else. It does have elastic, but then the elastic pulls at my neck. It didn't work for me. It might be great for an elementary aged student who is smaller
Most people are more concerned about how they "look" as opposed to how they play/sound... it's such a shame! TOO bad, so SAD! A neck strap is not going to make you less ?cool.? If you want to look ?cool,? you have to ?be? cool... If you want to be ?cool,? while playing Clarinet, you have to play well enough to command the ?respect? of your ?audience? without ever saying a ?word.? If the neck strap helps you play better & achieve your musical goals, then how ?COOL? IS THAT!!! It?s all about making ?MUSIC? anyway! The true ?technique? benefits of taking the ?weight? off your thumb-wrist-forearm-shoulder is that you are now ?free? to find/position your hand/fingers for optimum ergonomic function. In other words, it will be easier to play with greater speed, precision, & endurance! Don't worry about what your childish/infantile "peers" may decide to say in making fun of a "clarinet" player using a "sax" strap. I have been using one professionally, since 1988, as well as touring the world with the Army & Air Force Bands. NO One has ever made fun of, or even questioned, me for using it. Only my students decide that they don't want to be "different." (You can only lead a horse to water....) When I am playing in a group that requires all of my "doubles" (clarinet, saxes, flutes, picc.) I end up wearing a total of four (4) neck straps. I have a specific & dedicated strap for each axe... Soprano sax (curved or straight), Alto, Tenor, & Clarinet. Each strap is the set at the perfect length to enable a quick switch from one to another. A quick & helpful tip/hint for everyday use - Adjust the strap for length (I have found the shortest length to work best for me @ 6?1? tall). Once the length is set to your liking (the strap should be tight enough to pull the mouthpiece into playing position), simply put the strap on & off as you would any other neck strap (When in doubt, observe the sax players). Another ?MUST HAVE? clarinet accessory gives an additional boost in ergonomic function... the ?Ridenour? Clarinet Thumb Saddle (SEE Item Number: 158076 | Model: THUMB SADDLE). Use them both for amazing results.
I've had several students order this neck strap in the past year and it's been helpful, particularly for those who have thumb issues (double-jointed, etc) or small hands, making reach and stress on the right hand an issue. Additionally, I find that the elastic strap is nice compared to the other models out there (string), which I haven't found to be as comfortable or easy for young players to manipulate.
