Looking great out of the box, this played great to with a Rico Reserve 2 reed held on by a Rovner Mk3 ligature. The tone is excellent. I'm not sure who would know if this was being played professionally as it has no weakness I could find, except maybe for altissimo notes. But I've only played it for 5 minutes and it's totally exceeded my expectations for the money. Mr CW Fobes is genuine!
I took advantage of the free trial of the Debut from Clark and Fobes. I've often wondered why student mouthpieces were inferior to hard rubber - but now I know, there's no good reason. It's about the design, and a plastic mouthpiece can sound every bit as great as one made of hard rubber. I'm sticking to my Debut for the clarinet (for now). I might go back to the Vandoren 45 on a big band performance, but I'm testing the versatility of the Debut, and it seems to be measuring up just fine. As for ease and evenness of response, all expectations have been surpassed. Intonation is great, too, and the sound is lovely.
This model by Fobes is the best out there for the student on a budget. Listen, this thing is great. My teacher let my try one out for one lesson, and it was absolutely stunning the difference this made on playing my classical literature. Now, I'm no classics snob, but this mouthpiece truly helped me grow to a deeper understanding of what this music is all about. Tomorrow my teacher will show me the pro-model. I'm pretty sure I'll buy it if I can get the cash. Check out clarkwfobes.com for the man's page. It's not a very good-looking page, but let me tell you this is one of the best buys you can make. I'll bet the pro-model is even better.
This is an outstanding product and an incredible buy. If you didn't know better, you'd swear that you were playing a hard rubber mouthpiece costing three times the price.
