Description
Comfort Zone Proudly Presents Chops In A Box!

Comfort Zone Chops Lip Saver and Artificial Embouchure
Chops is an “artificial embouchure” that acts just as the natural embouchure does—as a fulcrum. It protects the inner bottom lip from the sharp bottom front teeth, allowing a brass or woodwind musician to play effortlessly and pain-free. Made of a special thermoplastic material, Chops allows the player to mold the artificial embouchure to his or her own teeth, ensuring a custom fit. Chops is designed to fit adult males, adult females and teen males. Teen or Petite Females and Children (boys and girls) should use the Chops Junior for the best fit.

Chops and Chops Junior work by stretching the soft, vibration-absorbing skin in the natural embouchure of the bottom lip over the artificial one, causing this same soft skin to become harder. The sound emitted from the clarinet or saxophone will then be produced by the clear vibration of the reed, and not absorbed or disrupted by the skin. The less vibration absorbed by the skin, the better the tone.

The secondary function of Chops and Chops Junior is to stop the cause of pain. How can a musician concentrate on his or her music if the inner bottom lip has to be babied due to soreness? When beginners first learn to play, their inner bottom lip is very tender and their teeth can be sharp, causing pain that inhibits their practicing. Couple this pain with discouraging squeaks due to a weak embouchure, and playing can become a chore instead of a joy. With no real practice time, the embouchure will never develop properly and the inner bottom lip will not strengthen. With Chops and Chops Junior, the embouchure can develop and the inner bottom lip will strengthen better against a smooth surface, rather than against sharp teeth. Students can now gain practice time as their embouchure develops, making the music teacher, parents and the student happy. The advancing player will practice and perform longer, and with less pain and discomfort, allowing them to continue to improve.

If your inner bottom lip is sore and you wish to enhance your tone, then you’ve come to the right place. For those of you from the “No Pain—No Gain” school, please do not purchase this product—you will be “sorely” disappointed!

"I use it and recommend it"

I bought the Comfort Zone Lip Saver, I use it, and I recommend it. This thing stops your lower teeth from cutting into the lip, while enabling the lip to fully support your reed... for a long time... with no pain. If you get a sore lower lip after playing, check out this little device. It'll let you work with stiffer reeds -- and that affects your sound. (For me, in a good way.) Three last comments: 1. Forget about using denture pads, whitening trays, mouthguards, or any other junk that you could put over your teeth. These are the wrong tools for the job. 2. No, I don't work for Comfort Zone, don't know who they are, and have not gotten compensated in any way for writing this post. 3. If you're thinking of advising me to "stop biting", don't bother. I'm 63 years old and have been playing since the 4th grade. I know what biting is and how to control it. Cheers, Debitspread

"Great Idea but a few Kinks"

UP Side of Buying This Item: If your a person who practices a lot during the day, then this product really does help out a lot as it puts a barrier between your bottom lip and your bottom teeth, so you don't get a sore lower lip and those nasty bite marks that can develop over long hours of practicing. Before i used strips of paper and fabric tape to solve this problem, but within an hr the paper devolved, and over time the tape gets unsightly. Some may disagree with me, but i do like the sound change that occurs when using this product, it helps stable your bottom lip which supports the embrasure and products a more warm stable sound. At least in my own experience Customizing the product takes too much time as well. the long front section was very uncomfortable for me so i had to cut it down and shape it till it felt comfortable. If you're not careful you can ruin the whole guard and be forced to use your spare. Another thing is that the rubber is too hard even after boiling it down for about 20 seconds making customizing that much more difficult. Overall Opinion: Its great if you practice long hours and are willing to spend the money and a good 2 to 3 hours to make it feel just right. A good investment, but not a great one. If your short on cash i recommend dealing with paper or tape as it is a cheaper alternative. I also don't recommend this for younger players as they may develop a tight embrasure (bitting harder then necessary). So wait off if you're still starting, the pain is good for you.

"Really helps but might not be what you expect"

With hours of rehearsals and practice each day, I've been cutting the inside of my lower lip so much that I eventually had to rest for half a week every other week so that it can heal. I've been looking everywhere and this seems to be the only product available and it really works! It took about 2 weeks to really get comfortable with this thing but you do have to trim the length or it will go deep into your gums. As to the complaints about it not molding to your teeth, it's not really supposed to work like wax but it does make slight indents to the shape of your teeth and after about half a month of continuous use, the rubber does start to get a little softer and mold better. It's extremely uncomfortable to use for the first couple of days but going back the way I used to play was just too painful and now I can't play without it. My embouchure did change to the point where I can't play at all without it and I'm even able to play for longer amount of time without getting tired because of the support this gives to my lower lip and muscles around my mouth. Overall, expect a big (good) change in your playing but don't expect a miracle to happen right at the start. My last thoughts would be that I agree with the other reviewer recommending beginners to not use this since it might prevent them from being able to develop a nice full sound at that early stage with this in their mouth.
