Well, I purchased my 1BS Vintage One about six years ago. To be very honest, I contribute much of my personal success to this horn and the sound that it has allowed me to produce. It enables me to play exceptionally free with a control that I have not been able to find on any other commercially handmade horn. Though Conn now manufactures their Vintage One series of horns, I guarantee you that there is just as much care and consideration put into the quality of their horns as their handmade predecessors (the switch from handmade to manufacturing took place a little over a year ago.) Take my word for it that every review that you will read on this site is 100% accurate, even down to the minor problem with the first valve, which I experienced for a short while before having it worked on. Something else that I feel is worth mentioning is that I have owned this horn for a quite some time since its introduction. The silver plating and clear lacquer on my horn is just as astonishing as the first time I pulled off the plastic. This is a true professional horn. Although there are many great trumpets out there, I've also owned Bach Strad?s, Yamaha?s, Schilke?s and even a couple of Mt. Vernon, I believe that you should strongly consider finding a dealer near you that sells the Vintage One series and try one out for yourself before conforming to the Bach Strad, which I have fallen victim to as well. I promise you that this horn will serve your playing needs for life.
I have played Trumpet for 50+ years and played lots of trumpets. I love the response and the short valve stems on The Conn 1B Vintage. I used to play on the Bach Strad but I like the sound of the Conn Vintage better.
I play Nu Jazz and Salsa live and in the studio. If you play Salsa you know that you spend most of your time above the staff. I ordered the Vintage One with the #34 leadpipe and this baby will sing in the upper register. I recommend trying the 11/2 CKG mouthpiece that comes with the horn. It really gives the horn a smooth mellow jazz tone. The V1 is more free-blowing than my Schilke B1 and is more tonally colorful than the Bobby Shew. Even though this horn is not lightweight it resonates like crazy but has the slotting power of a braced horn. The sound is anything but vintage. It has a modern sound with a full format of harmonics. The lower register is near flugel-like and the upper register is sharp and clear without being harsh. Absolutely a great horn, with short throw valves that you don't have to fight to riff off fast arpeggios. Fit and finish are outstanding and the silver plate is equal in quality to a Schilke. Buy this horn and get ready to have fun playing again...
Having grown up with a Conn Director Cornet, I vowed never to own a Conn. I dreamed of one day owning a Bach Strad. I tried several different horns Bach Strad, King, Yamaha Xeno, and then I played the Vintage One. Wow! I couldn't believe the sound I was getting out of this horn; warm in the lows, rich in the highs. I couldn't believe my ears. I fell in love with this horn from the first time I played it. If I had not played it I would not have been a believer. I am a believer in the quality of the Vintage One. I preferred the Rose Brass Bell (BRSP). If you are looking for a pro-level horn or a step up from a student horn, look no further. This is the horn for you!
I tried Bach Strads, Yamaha Xeno's, Jupiter's 1000s and King's Silver Flair. The Vintage One really played above them all. A great register and quality tone. It looks great and has really improved my trumpet playing. If you're a serious player give the 1B-SP a try. I think the patented heavyweight valve caps make an excellent pitch.
