I am not a fan of sousaphones normally and I would always suggest a marching tuba first, but this is a fantastic horn. Really heavy so be careful for younger players, or those (like me) with back problems, but otherwise a superb horn worthy of consideration for any marching band.
I have played many 20K's over the years. Quality of the Lacquered has dropped! They used to be sturdier, but now the metal is softer, and my guess thinner. I have also had to deal with manufacturing inconsistencies getting worse. The silver has a brighter tone, is heavier and doesn't dent as easily.
I am in a high school marching band. We have 3 conn 20k's, 3 kings, one jupiter and about 7 or 8 backup tubas that are lacquer finished and these conns are the best we have even being almost 10 years old. The Jupiter is brand new and doesn't even compare. Almost plays as good as our concert miraphones. I wouldn't buy any other type or play in a college band that didn't have these tubas.
I have played on this horn for several years, and I would not even consider buying any other brand. This sousa has a great sound and is easy to play.
This is a great tuba, my band has one. We have one Conn 20k, 2 kings and a Jupiter. The 20k is the best sounding and plays better. It?s easier to play in any range. This is by far the best and my favorite sousaphone; the valves are shorter and easier to press. The bore of the pipes are bigger also so it is easy to play louder and more powerful. The only downside is the weight; it?s a good 10 to 15 pounds heavier than other tubas.
