This horn is definitely worth a second look. While it not only gives a clear, crisp tone, it also has an immense range. Slurs and partial jumps are performed easily and clearly, without any junk in between notes. The range on this horn, for me, is well suited for students. It's not difficult to sustain a high Bb, C, Db, or Eb (albeit they might be out of tune) on an open partial; with valves, it's even easier. I wish I could give a more in depth review, but that is all I can manage to say for now. It gives a clear sound with lovely dark notes that should come from a tuba; it has a great range for students from pedal notes to higher notes. The only thing is that on my particular tuba, the fourth valve is terribly flat even with the slide pushed in, but I make up for it by using 1 and 3. Moreover, the third valve is a bit out of tune, but just by a hair and can be adjusted while playing using the third valve slide. But looking at at a picture of this horn, the 4th valve slide on MY tuba does not exist, so you might not have problems (they moved the tubing around for the 4th). If you're confused, read the next paragraph to see what I mean. One note is that I DO play on a much older version. I am not sure when exactly it was made nor am I sure how many 'revisions' of the 5J has come out since, but I'm willing to say it's about 15-20 years old (at the very least 10 years). It's dinged up, it's not even shiny, but it plays well (heck, some genius replaced the spit keys with different 'customized' spit keys that don't work AND the thumb ring was definitely replaced for some reason...soldering is missing as well. But don't be scared, MY horn was treated poorly by students before me!). Either way, it's a very nice horn for its price.
