I've tried them all. The Bach 5G, Denis Wick's SM3, The Schilke 51D, and several other big name mouthpieces. They all had something I was looking for but not all the features I wanted. I finally had enough cash to get the "fabled" Bowman BB1. It's worth every cent. For one the BB1 gives you that warm, husky Euphonium sound that everyone strives for. The mouthpiece rim is just perfect for my lips because I can shoot up to super high notes such as Double Eb's and F's with relative ease as well as get to notes such as Petal F and Bb. It also cleaned up my articulation with Double and triple tunging. Overall it's worth a look.
Right out of the box and into my horn I noticed a significant difference in my playing. I am playing on the Besson 2051 Prestige and was switching from a Marcinkiewicz to the BB1. Overall, a much better tone quality and a more consistent clarity of pitch was apparent. Highly recommended.
I bought the BB1 very recently and the first impression is very good. The comfort of playing as well as the sound is remarkable. My performance has improved both in the high and low range. In addition, this mouthpiece gives me more flexibility and endurance. Together with other members of the band, We were very impressed. Our solo euphonium player and myself have switched to the BB1 mouthpiece, and my expectation is that the other euphonium players in the band will follow soon.
I moved from a Back 5G to the BB1 and could automatically tell the difference. I thought that my 5G was getting out the dark sound that I wanted, but when I played this mouthpiece it had a much more to offer. Although, like any new mouthpiece it does takes some getting used to, but as soon as I did, my range, tone, and flexibility started getting better. So it's definitely worth it!
I went from a Vincent Bach 5G (which was cracking and deteriorating) to this, and I have improved flexibility and projection when I play with this mouthpiece. Not only that, but it feels great too. I highly recommend this line of mouthpieces and will be using them from now on.
