I have vintage saxophones. They don't live in a museum. I play them. So they are carried about and go off in the car with me regularly. But I'd rather not destroy the old cases they came in, especially since they enhance the resale value of the old instruments in the event I do resell. Also those old cases are not as well designed to protect the horns. Thus I spend some money on new cases for regular use and am looking for the best value, which I would say this case is.
This case does, in fact, very nicely hold an H. Couf Superba I tenor and would therefore probably do so as well for vintage horns such as the older Conns, etc...those horns with bigger bell flares and larger bow radius dimensions. My Couf fits very snugly and securely in the case. There is a crevice for the neck and a moderate sized accessory compartment. It's not fancy by any stretch of the imagination, but it is a solidly built, very utilitarian case that affords much more protection than many soft-sided shaped cases. It may not be hip...but your repair tech may see a lot less of you than the cats with the stylish but less protective cases. Since it's made in Lake Geneva, WI I guess they've finally found a use for the old Playboy mansion....Thanks, Hugh!
I recently purchased a used Couf Superba tenor and discovered it would not fit my old Selmer tray pack, nor would it fit my hard sided Pro-Tech gig bag. I am a doubler and prefer a hard-shell case to a soft-sided gig bag, primarily in order to keep the horn in adjustment. These Coufs are difficult to find replacement cases for, and I was pleased that the DEG case was an option. It is well-made and seems a good value for the price. The interior fittings do not seem as substantial as on some cases, but the test is how it will hold up over time. Still, this is a good solution for someone with an older saxophone and is worth consideration.
