I just bought this to round out my small home studio. I didn't want to spend a lot of cash, since it is just to lay down tracks now and then. Well, I was pleasantry surprised. This bass is a great buy! The picture does not do the satin finish justice. It sounds and plays great...Great neck... And as far as staying in tune I have had no problems. In fact, it was IN tune when I took it out of the box. This is an excellent bass for a beginner, or for someone who just wants to have one around, just in case.
Just received my 09m today. Only took six days after ordering [good job 123]. Nice and safely packed I opened it up and gazed upon one of the most beautiful pieces of work in the bass world. finish and hardware are outstanding. The two octave neck [35.25 inches from bottom of bridge to nut] is so fast I had to put on my seatbelt to keep from falling off. I have been playing for forty years and was astounded by the accessibility of every note on the neck. Granted it only has one pickup and two knobs, but this baby will do what you want it to do with proper amplification. Not for those who require all the "bells & whistles" but if you want to lay down a bass line solid, this is the one. Overall,I would recommend this piece for looks, playability and price range. I would give it six stars but I can only go up to five.
I waited a few months to post this review so that I would have time to try out some other basses and get used to all the nuances of mine (this is my first foray into the world of bass). Quite honestly, I don't think I've ever had a real honest complaint about my bass. Ok, first off, the thing looks absolutely gorgeous; more than once I've had people think this was a $1000+ dollar bass. The fast neck is another huge plus. One sort of double-edged sword about the bass is the sound. It has a very bright and twangy sound, which is excellent for punk rock and 70s rock, but not so great for jazz. Everything else sounds ok on it. But I don't think I really realized how good this bass was until yesterday, when I went down to the music store to try out the basses there. I started to play on a few, and I realized: Some of these basses that cost twice what mine did don't sound as good. I tried some Ibanez basses; a few Squires, even some other Deans, but none of them beat my Playmate. The only things that I've tried that could were: its older brother the Dean Edge, a Fender Jazz bass, and a Gibson-Tobias bass, all of which cost at least 3 times as much. So if you are a beginner, a guitarist wanting to learn bass, or an intermediate player looking for a backup, for the price you can't go wrong, the sound is excellent, the speed is incredible, and it looks amazing. Get it!
This bass is amazing! In all my years of playing I have never found a bass cheaper then this! If you ever needed a bass this would be it.
This bass sounds pretty good. Incredible playability. It could use some improvement in the looks department. You have to be careful about how much force you apply to the jack, thouugh. It's not particularly well put together in the first place, so plugging it in too hard will break it and require some simple surgery. Good starter bass, but probably not what a professional will want.
