This mute is a very versatile cup mute. The adjustable cup allows open and "tight" cupping on my 4 small bore trombones and 1 large bore , 8 1/2 inch Edwards .547. It would not work nor is it designed for use on a bass bone. The sound of this cup mute is excellent in high and mid-range, not very good in low and pedal range. Is any cup mute really good there? There are some minor flaws in the construction of this mute. The plastic rim on the cup itself gets loose in time. It is important to keep it tight so that fast cupping doesn't damage your horn's bell. I recommend applying epoxy or crazy glue on several points on the inside of the black plastic cup rim as soon as you purchase the mute to solve this deficiency. Also, in time, the small end (neck) of the mute tends to create mute dings on your horn. There is the result of the design of only a very thin, nylon(?) band glued to the neck of the mute. With increased use, repetitive and fast mute changes, the neck band wears very quickly, exposing the thin aluminum neck and producing mute dings. The aluminum is quite thin, maybe thus giving the mute a good sound, but it dents easily, especially when one eventually drops the mute in swift mute change situations. My solution to this problem is to glue 4 strips of sheet cork cut to about 1/2 inch on top of the nylon/cloth band. It does not seem to dampen the sound in any way and it protects your bell. If you do this or something similar, the mute will last for many years and protect your horns. The quality of the installed mute corks is excellent and the glue used has never failed on both of my Wick mutes. After many years of use, at least 10 in my case, the cup begins to slip too freely from wear and tear, but that is easily remedied, too, no need to get into that now. I highly recommend this mute, primarily for it's excellent sound quality and versatility for use on both small and large bore (not Bass Bone horns).
