This mouthpiece is described as having a shallow cup, with a resonant high register, for lead Jazz players. When I received the mouthpiece I found it to be the same diameters as a yamaha size 48, with a moderate depth cup, which is the same as a concert band players mouthpiece. It's great for concert band, but not Jazz as described. I had higher expectations from this mouthpiece.
I started off on a Bach 6 1-2al, then I went to Schilke, then I thought I'd give Denis Wick a try. The shipping was pretty quick, and the product is outstanding. I have been using a Schilke 53 (3G) for quite a while until I bought a Denis Wick 4AL. As a Euphonium player, I think that a 4AL is the perfect mouthpiece for me, and the deep cup is perfect for a Euph player like me. I give Denis Wick 5 stars.
The 1AL is a focused mouthpiece that has an ease of centering pitches and making a smooth sound, especially on the lower notes and pedal tones. I find that I can't produce a fat sound. The loudest dynamic I can get to is forte, unless I force the notes out and make a horrid sound. The 1AL is good on the ears, but isn't suited for loud playing.
one reviewer noted that the mouthpiece wasn't the right size for jazz - there are plenty of variations available, and if the particular size you tried doesn't work, then find something deeper or shallower. I've played Wick mouthpieces for years, and LOVE them!
