This mouthpiece is an excellent mouthpiece. Sound is rich and full along with enough edge to produce an excellent jazz tone. I prefer to use it with #3 Vandoren reeds. With that reed it makes the mouthpiece very flexable. With this setup you can go from a solid semi-classical tone to a rich jazz tone with just a simple push of more air. A stronger reed will give you a more rich classical tone as well. You can not go wrong with this buy. From the moment you open the pretty box you will be happy with this mouthpiece.
I have been playing classical alto with a Rousseau NC4 on a vintage SML and it has a great sound. I play in town bands with vintage Conns and have a small collection of mouthpieces most in the $100 - $150 range and a few in the $250. I still thought I needed a mpc that would give me a better sound. I purchased the JDX6 and use Rico Jazz 3 soft reeds. The sound is perfect. It can play soft and really has power when pushed. There are always intonation problems with these vintage horns that you learn to adjust to but with the JDX it was almost spot on up and down the horn. This mpc is as good if not better than all the pieces I have. It is a great buy.
I have to say after 25 years of playing Jazz this mouthpiece is the best I have ever played for the Alto Sax. It is more versatile than a New York Meyer! I played the Meyer 7M for 10 years before switching to this JDX7 beauty about 15 years ago. I do lie the 'buzz' effect of the New York Meyer but you can't play a classical gig with that mouthpiece.
Pros: Better than a stock mouthpiece, extremely wide dynamic range, CHEAP!!! Cons: Doesn't respond well to imperfect reeds, thins out easily, sometimes unstable, not well suited to straight-ahead jazz, somewhat compromised intonation. This mouthpiece definitely has its own sound... if you play a lot of lead, you might like it. Personally, I find myself 'fighting' it to get the warm sound I want. I can still achieve the same presence and edge with a round chamber/low baffle mouthpiece (vintage Meyer type) without tone and intonation compromises. There are better options, but you have to pay more to have them.
This mouthpiece is a bright mouthpiece if you don't use air support. Without air support you cannot play with a tone that belongs in a big band or a school jazz band. otherwise it does great when you get use to it and when you tune it goes more on the end of the cork than in the middle.
